So, long story short, our species came up with 5G, self-teaching automation, SDN, all that, and then there was nothing to do. They're all went down into the caves to play video games, and never reproduced. I'm all that's left; I'm the on call repair guy. I don't suppose you'd have anything that needed fixing? Damn. Couildn't agree with you more--but the message here though is a subtle one to embrace what we do have. I talked about earlier how Palestinians in the West Bank just got access to 3G and are excited about it--and especially Mobile Startups!!! The challenge is to reconcile it with the rise of AI though and really ask the question as to whether "Humans will be humans". @mpouraryan, good reference on a book.
Understand the concern on AI - but in working with AI, it will fill the space that we "allow", if we do not think and use it to augment what we want to do, and we turn over the "keys to the car", it will no doubt consume all the power we allow. So we have to stay thinking and in control in how we design and use it, right? mpouraryan

Re: Cartoon Contest
@mpouraryan, I think those projections reflect industry solutions - which if companies do not put in the investment to the human capital and simply cut costs that will be the case. There are, however, companies that are upskilling their human capital and recyling those employees in ways that take advantage of the AI transformation. Those are the smart companies I am betting on!

As I reflected upon your comments, I assume Amazon is amongst them--as for instance, they're looking to "disrupt" Drugs now...there is a rumor that they're looking to buy what's left of Rite-Aide--I bring this up to underscore the sense of transformationa and to see who beyond Amazon is at forefront...as you saw from an indictment of Google I shared under separate cover, Google is interestgingly challenged....

@mpouraryan, good examples - but they are not my examples. They are examples of those "expediting" the system. So I am with you. They are making fast strides and consume a lot of attention, but they are not the examples I believe will be the future I am thinking of! Those would be truly the companies that are "building" their own futures and developing the capability to create wealth.

Re: Cartoon Contest
@mpouraryan: To be fair, that's 40% of all the work (1) that we have now and (2) that we have the capability to predict.
It's entirely possible that that 40% figure properly and reasonably accurately takes into account those "unknown unknowns"...but I am doubtful. I don't see this automation trend, in and of itself (some other apocalyptic and/or dystopian AI fears aside), as disastrous for the economy any more than the printing press or electricity or the assembly line were. Just like technologies, new jobs are created that we didn't even think of 20 years ago as other jobs mostly obsolesce. Moreover, automation means disruption, and disruption begets disruption, which means new businesses, more competition, brand new business models and revenue streams, and so on. Put another way, there are many more things that have me more worried for the future than automation in and of itself. (Although there are certain automated technologies that have me particularly concerned, but not automation as a whole.) DHagar

I live in the U.S. and am an AT&T customer. I recently traveled to Spain, and thanks to AT&Ts day pass I was able to use my network as usual for an extra $10 a day. I connected to the network as soon as I landed, and while I eventually got to LTE, the first thing that came up was 3G. I have to say I was a bit taken aback considering I hadn't seen the 3G symbol for years.

Not sure if Bermuda counts because it technically is part of the UK (albeit it has its own limited sovereignty, including its own money), but the island has public WiFi available for residents and visitors in public places.
