Re: Another Blow to Theaters
Supposedly, at least in the first few weeks or couple months a movie is out, all the theater's ticket revenue is going to the studios/producers/what-have-you, so all their money comes from refreshments -- thus why they price them so high and are so GRRRRRR about people bringing their own snacks/drinks.

I don't say this to disagree with you.  I say this to help explain the broken model that legacy Hollywood is/has become.

@elizabethv: ONE aspect of the utter ridiculousness of that is that I can sit at home in a reclining chair and watch video I already pay for via cable subscription, OTT subscription, or just plain ol' Internet subscription (for video that is otherwise free).

Re: Interesting...
@Ariella: Indeed--and that's a trend that began with the airlines, what, over 12 years ago?

The one problem of that, though, when it's a touchscreen: having to feel someone in the seat behind you pressing much harder than necessary on the screen on the back of your seat (particularly if they are less tech savvy and don't quite understand that touchscreens don't require high degrees of pressure).  I'm very thankful for the airlines that don't use touchscreens and instead have armrest controls.

Re: Interesting...
@Joe I guess we'd have to add that to the list of frequent flyer problems: toomuch pressure on a touch screens.

Re: Another Blow to Theaters
@Joe Stanganelli The only problem with that is content providers are still going to keep new releases from you. It's actually a pretty good marketing ploy: While you are watching content you already pay for, they push content you should be paying for.

Re: Another Blow to Theaters
@dcawrey: See, for me personally, I'm fine with that, because (1) I'm generally perfectly content to rewatch the same stuff over and over (Did I mention one of my favorite channels is the Game Show Network?), and (2) I think movies, the past 10+ years are so, have generally been garbage (or, at least, not my cup of tea) -- and on the infrequent occasion that there's a newer release I *really* want to see, I'll wait until I see a good price for the DVD online or at Target or Walmart (which tends to be cheaper than the on-demand rental price).

The only time I got "burned" by that was when I was waiting for the complete series of House to come on to Netflix.  I waited and I waited and it didn't come.

Finally, Christmas was around the corner and my mom began hectoring me about what to get me for Christmas, when the truthful answer is usually "nothing" or "socks," and it always ends up with her sending me a gift card of some kind -- always with the guilt-driving message/explanation of "I never know what you want."  So that year, I said, look, if you really want to get me something, you can get me the boxed set of House on DVD.

So she did.  Yay.

And then about a week later, as January began, Netflix announced it had just gotten House.

Argh.

Hulu VR Update
I believe Hulu has embarked on something great with this idea. Also, I don't think it's that Millennials are lazy and not interested in theaters. It's about being in the comfort of your own home without having to listen to people chew on popcorn and candy, and the privacy. I'm all for this VR home-theater idea. How do I sign on?

Re: Hulu VR Update
@srufolo1 Here's my question: Is this a real technology play for Hulu, or a gimmick?

I'm asking because I think a lot of content providers are going to talk about VR as a new business line. But it just seems like a whole lot of marketing nonsense to me. I'm not interested in watching Brooklyn Nine Nine in VR.

Re: Hulu VR Update
@dcawey: I don't think a company of Hulu's stature would not be using gimmicks as a marketing strategy. I'm not on Hulu's marketing team, but I think the company has a solid plan in mind as far as content goes.

Movie Theatre's
Honestly, with the direction movie theaters are going, that doesn't sound like a half-bad idea. To justify the high prices of their tickets a lot of movie theaters are switching to the reclining chair seating and even offering delivery of food right to your seat. Except that also means you are assigned a seat in the theater, and there are far fewer seats. So really, it's best to purchase your tickets ahead of time. Gone are the days where you might just want to show up at the theater to see a movie. Over the weekend my husband and I were going to a United Artist theater, and while I knew the local AMC theaters had made this switch, I was completely oblivious to the fact that United Artist had as well. Top that off with the fact that when we arrived was the actual start time of the movie. (Rogue One - we're behind.) By the time we arrived the only available seats were in the front row. Thinking it was similar to the front row of yesteryear we agreed. But it wasn't, and I honestly don't even know why they bothered with that row. Even in the fully reclined chair, you're still basically looking straight up to see the movie. Needless to say we got our money back and left. I've always really enjoyed going to the movies, but the additional hassle has me quesitoning whether or not it's even worth it.
