Re: Hulu VR threaten
I don't think this is what will destroy move theaters. The problem isn't technology, it's the content itself. Think about it: The cost for a single person to go see a move is more expensive than a Netflix subscription. That's the problem: Economics.

Re: Interesting...
This is all great but we should look at what the Fcc is doing to the internet and how those providers will work with the new technology. Without the bandwidth, the server that will provide the video will cost too much for the everyday customer. And with the new President Trump in his knowledge of the internet it will be up to the customer to push for a better way to enjoy the home media service the Hulu and those services provide.

Re: Interesting...
Owner85593  - One of the advantages of this approach is that the actual video is 2D, even though the virtual theatre is 3D. But that doesn't have the same bandwidth implications, as that imagery is static. So it creates an immersive experience, but not with high-bandwidth 360-degree video.

Re: Another Blow to Theaters
@afwriter - a lot of theaters are justifying the cost of their tickets with reclining chairs. Which personally are the bane of my movie-viewing existence. I work nights and take care of a preschooler and toddler during the day. Then, just to top that all off, I'm at the end of my third pregnancy. So to say I'm tired all of the time is a gross-understatement. Which means any time we go to the movies anymore, if I'm in a reclining seat, it doesn't matter what the movie is, I'm falling asleep. But AMC still has $5 movies if you go before noon, so that helps us justify the expense. If I'm taking my kids though, we're waiting and going to the $1.50 theater in town. It's not like they really care, my kids are under 5.

1. true, though odds are pretty good of that, especially for people working in tech.

2. don't hold back, tell us how you really feel.

Re: Hulu VR threaten
@dcawrey yes, that's how my MIL thinks. Why should she pay for a movie ticket when she could rent the film (I don't think she's gotten to the point of contemplating streaming services) or even check it out for free from the library if she waits to see it? However, I think she would consider springing for a ticket if it means going out with friends. I'm not sure the younger generation thinks in quite those economical terms.

@Joe no question about it; it's how extroverts are wired.

<On the Millennial side, I think it comes down more to the widely studied and acknowledged Millennial preference for a personal screen when viewing video.>

@Joe I agree, I think that is so. Consider the fact that even airplanes stopped showing movies on a screen for all in favor of individual screens on seatbacks that offers viewers choices.

Re: Interesting...
@mhh: I remember reading years ago (it may have been Scott Adams who wrote it but I forget) that car makers, electronics manufacturers, and the like purposely throw seemingly "random" letters in the names of their products/models to suggest sex.  (e.g., the BMW S.X)  I suspect Apple/iPhone is no different.

That said, I rather think that after Z we would just roll right back to A...  That's certainly better than, say, going to W.

Or maybe it will be "Generation Smith"...to complement "Generation Jones".
