5G coming fast
I find it hard to believe that we are going to see 5G commercially before 2020, but my skepticism is only to temper my excitement. I can't wait for the era of 5G and with transformation starting to catch on, who knows how fast we'll have 5G in our metaphorical hands.

Will 5G get Kubernetes?
I'm just wondering if anyone here thinks that telcos or CSPs will get on the Kubernetes bandwagon at some point? Will these "cloud immigrants" build on top of OpenStack deployments -- or leave that to others?

And whoever builds it, will it be a relatively "closed top to an open stack", i.e. services from the cloud but the company-facing control portions fairly tightly held (of course data will always be as controlled as possible in a competitive world) -- or will it be "open topped," i.e. the top layer of the open stack will be more open source software, so that the whole thing is open all the way to the data (which again will be tightly held, of course, at least for the next couple of generations). The former might be culturally easier for cloud immigrants, the latter might be quicker, more agile, and more 3rd-party friendly.

I'm guessing the cloud immigrants will not tend to be 3rd party friendly as much as the cloud natives who have open standards and more nimble development in their DNA.

Absolutely concur, the cloud natives will head for the "open top" very naturally; it's a culture thing.

@afwriter I read about various 5G demonstrations happening around the world, but I agree with you that it's unlikely to become really mainstream within the next couple of years.

I know that here in the States AT&T is already doing 5G tests, but like you said, there is a difference between beginning testing and wide mainstream use.

JohnB, I wonder what it would take to "convert" the cloud immigrants to the "open top" mindset that cloud native have? How does the culture of an industry change with technology? Hmmm.

Well, historically ... business cultures change fast if there's a major competitive disadvantage, or in the face of government regulation/taxation. Not much else moves them quickly. I don't really see the open top as being immediately and obviously better in most shops; they will get most of the advantages of open systems, most of the time, from the open-system part of the stack, and it will be fairly rare that the closed last steps will cost so much time and effort that people will question it. So I suspect this will be a PBR (progress by retirement, not the popular beer) kind of change.
