Culture and tradition always matter
"They're doing a lot at the edge because of what they need to do from a service delivery and service rollout standpoint. With the government, they're thinking a lot in terms of smart cities, connected vehicles; lots of IoT kinds of applications. The government is focusing very aggressively on those kinds of things in China."
One of the key factors here is that China does not have anything like our Western and especially American free-market cult, so an idea that makes sense to roll out in a big, centralized, standardized form -- like smart cities -- can just roll out that way, and there's nothing like a Western capitalist's fear of rolling out too early and catching the wrong wave, because everyone involved knows that if the government decrees we're using Tech Approach A, we will now only switch to B if A absolutely fails.
Western projects tend to advance fastest where the bets are small enough for lots of entrepreneurs to place them. There's a burst of chaos, a rapid convergence to a best solution, and then very swift deployment after. The Chinese commitment style means rapid movement at the beginning on a pretty good but not necessarily best solution -- kind of the principle that if you bark up the almost-right tree, you can make it as good as the right one in less time.

Re: Open Daylight for China
Interesting perspective on why open source is used in China.
I would have thought they would be more interested in proprietary code in order to protect infrastructure from foreign actors. What's innovative about open is the many different lenses people look at this technology through.

@Mike Robuck I know for the fact China gov. do offer vendors subsidized shipping... if you look at ebay - many items from China have free shipping...
Re: Open Daylight for China
I was a bit surprised to hear her say it was very competitive in China. I had assumed vendors with goverment backing enjoyed some sort of monopoly status.

Why China Matters
Whether we like it or not, China (and Asia) have always mattered to the U.S. and the rest of the world as far as trade, and beyond. It's interesting to note that China is interested in open source because it seems to be so concerned with proprietorship and security.

Open Daylight for China
I think that China is very important because they have advanced technology from genuius and as well as making our shoes etc. from there. So they can be a great value for us and everyone
