Re: TV Time
I do the same!

And then I realize I just missed something, so rewind it, but rewind it too far, so get redistracted by my phone before the part I just missed plays again, resulting in an embarrassing cycle that happens way too frequently :-)

Re: TV Time
I agree. I honestly feel like most live television programs tend to be dull and do not keep my attention whatsoever!

Re: TV Time
@Adi - as someone who has always loved multi-tasking, when I heard recently that multi-tasking is actually a bad thing. I wanted to scoff at the information. But then, your comment rings absolutely true for me also. 3-4 years ago I never struggled to get "into" a movie or TV show I really enjoyed. Now, unless I'm in a movie theater, where my cell phone would be a most unwelcome sight, I can't watch anything without checking Facebook at least once. I even know this is a problem and try to set times for my favorite shows where I can devote myself to them. But it never much matters, at some point I'll find myself completely distracted.

Re: TV Time
@faryl - I'm noticing that problem too. Even when there's no need, I find myself reaching for my smartphone during most shows. There's something a bit troubling about it; if I'm like this in my forties, how well will coming generations be able to maintain their focus? Will everything have to be condensed into 30-second sound bites to communicate with them, and what does that mean for more nuanced, complex issues?

Re: The Numbers
Does this mean that 40% of respondents said that at some point they have looked for or purchased a product after seeing a commercial, or that 40% of commercial viewers look for/purchase the product after seeing it? If the former, I'm kind of surprised it's that low, given the amount of shopping done online these days (how many people could say they've not done that for at least one thing?) The latter seems to indicate a really high conversion rate of turning viewers into purchasers though.

Re: Digital Multitasking
I'm guessing that since this was a survey, people self-reported what they do (which leads to its own set of data issues!).

Re: The Numbers
@Adi yes, I know marketers do try to capitalize on that and get more insight than Nielsen ratings provide. That's why we've seen a lot more discussion of "second screen" possibilities in the past couple of years. This article http://lab.secondstreet.com/articles/second-screen-engagement-campaigns/ is one example.
