Re: NBC's Black is Ready to Play
@afwriter Guess I could have gone to the clubhouse in my development to watch the Super Bowl, but I didn't think of that.

Re: NBC's Black is Ready to Play
afwriter - last year sports ratings were down, and there was concern that millennials were less interested in sports than prior generations. But March Madness blew away all previous records, so looks like sports remain the one reliable aggregator of audiences. And people will pay for that.

Re: NBC's Black is Ready to Play
There is so much money to be made by these broadcasts I don't know if it will ever change. We can hope that someday the events that unite all of us will be more readily available.

Re: NBC's Black is Ready to Play
@Adi That's what I suspected although I had hoped things would change with sports. I missed the Super Bowl this year because I didn't have cable, and you can't stream exclusive sports events live. Maybe someday this will change.

Re: NBC's Black is Ready to Play
srufolo - That's certainly more likely, although exclusive sports events licensing will still remain, so it will still be restricted to only pay subscribers, or pay-TV subscribers who have to authenticate themselves.

NBC's Black is Ready to Play
Hopefully Playmaker Media in its partnership with Turner Sports' iStreamPlanet will make sporting events more accessible via whatever technology device to more people. Most sporting events, if you don't have cable or whatever, and do not have access to the network that shows a particular event such as the Super Bowl, the viewer is not able to watch them.

Re: Black is ready
dcawrey - it's interesting. Eric was very careful when I asked him if he felt OTT would replace broadcast. But to me, it does seem that we are already seeing a fragmentation of audiences to some extent. Tough to say how many will switch, and also dependent on technology and business cases, but I think most people today would rather be employed in the digital/OTT stack than the traditional broadcast.

Re: Black is ready
One thing I think NBC Sports has been smart about is Sunday Night Football.
Although it is a major broadcast entity, NBC also streams it online. This hybrid approach it has been conducting for years is pretty smart. NBC knows its core audience will someday be completely OTT.
