Hires Head VR
I wonder what new ideas will this new person have for the virtual reality world, hopefully something different and more advanced.

Re: Hires Head VR
This seems like a very smart move for Huawei. Oculus has been working on its VR product for a while now. I believe the product is mature and may even be profitable by now. It'll be very interesting to see what LaValle brings to Huawei.

Re: Hires Head VR
On the heels of nabbing former AT&T exec Margaret Chiosi, this is another big hire by Huawei. Huawei can throw a lot of resources at AR and VR, so it will be interesting to see what impact LaValle has in this area.

On a somewhat related note, I wasn't aware of the various low end VR goggles until this Xmas. Several family members got them as gifts and the results were mixed.

Wow! Huawei is building quite a team these days!!

I saw the low-end VR toys this year too. I was surprised to see them in-stores. Did you happen to test a headset? I thought Google would be the first to offer lower cost VR headsets in stores considering the popularity of Cardboard.

Re: Hires Head VR
@faryl There has been a lot of advertising this holiday season for the Samsung Gear. Basically, the ad is just showing what the initial experiences are for people who try VR.

It's a good marketing ploy. The next challenge for VR, however, is getting people to develop long-lasting uses for it.

Very true fact !

I am sure we all are very excited about how things are shaping up with VR. But the real deal is absolutely to develop how VR can be used.

@ms.a I wouldn't have expected this move from Huawei. They must have something very interesting planned for VR. I wonder if they plan to develop both hardware and software. Will the hardware include a new phone? Looking forward to further reports.

Huawei Hires Former Oculus Principal
I consider this a smart move on Huawei's part to hire Steve LaValle as its Chief Scientist of VR/AR/MR. Not only does he have the Oculus experience under his belt, but he's a professor at a university. Most colleges today stress research, which could be extremely useful in its application toward VR development at Huawei.

Good move. VR and AR are going to be big business over the coming years. I think as we see a generational shift people will start adopting these technologies. I don't think older generations will be as interested, but younger people certainly will.

Good point. I was exactly thinking the same. He is professor at university where he gets to participate in may research related activities and interaction with many folks of similar background. That would be an added advantage.

@lee10 that's a distinct possibility, I should think. Perhaps they could apply what they know about making good quality, affordable products to the development of VR headsets.

@lee10 I haven't looked into VR myself. Is the Oculus pricy? I've read about compatibility issues among VR game providers, but never anything about device costs.

I assume VR games live in a unique world that other platform games do not. Proprietary delivery isn't always best considering the number of phones or other viewers that might want to offer access.

Good thoughts. It makes sense of what you stated about proprietary delivery considering multiple devices.
