Re: Does anyone really watch video in real time anymore?
@Michelle: Niche livestreaming social networks have been around for a while.  It's just that major networks (like FB) have begun to offer it/make it easier for mobile devices.  Therefore, I doubt we'll see much more addition to network burden overall and instead see some of that traffic shift to other social networks.

Re: Does anyone really watch video in real time anymore?
@mpouraryan: But...I might respectfully offer that you are a member of a niche audience -- an Apple fan trying to get live Apple announcements on your Apple mobile device.  Most people -- even most Apple-device owners/users, I daresay -- don't particularly care about WWDC and the like.

There is nothing wrong with niche audiences (e.g., gamers, etc.), and they do and will continue to have an impact, but I don't see them blowing up the Internet -- even collectively.

Re: Does anyone really watch video in real time anymore?
@freehe: Perhaps, but "nice-to-have" can very quickly become "must-have" once it's been around long enough and once people have gotten substantially used to it.

Imagine going to a car dealership and finding that none of the cars they're selling have FM radio or a CD player.  Those features are clearly in the "nice to have" category...but that dealership probably wouldn't do very well, all other things being equal.

@Joe Ahh, no real change but rather a shift. I hadn't really thought of it in that way.

Re: Does anyone really watch video in real time anymore?
@Michelle: Yeah, it's 2016.  It's not like people haven't thought of livestreaming from their mobile devices before.  The major social network accessibility is, for the most part, merely going to be a proposition of WHERE the traffic is.

@Joe actually, it's nearly 2017 (and the new year will probably be live-streamed somewhere)

Re: Does anyone really watch video in real time anymore?
@Joe:  I appreciate the kind compliment--it is true that beyond our "niche space" we deliberate and discuss at times here and beyond, ordinary folks are not as concerned.  But there is no doubt the need for bandwidth is there--it is going to be a challenge and I'd be keen to see what the likes of Softbank (that has promised to invest billions), One web, etc. will do to transform that space--which I look forward to deliberating here throughout 2017.

It was.. and I didn't watch it.. but I time-shifted watching Mariah Carey's viral (non)performance. I don't get how anyone could suggest that she may have "forgotten" the lines to her own songs? If the plan was for her to lip sync, she'd have to know the words still! She just couldn't hear the music to know when to lip sync....

Re: Does anyone really watch video in real time anymore?
@mhhf1ve Same here. I caught a clip of that performance. It seemed like sound just went on with the playlist even though she clearly wasn't in sync. I kept thinking 'maybe they'll stop this song and restart with visual cues for her'. They never did...

Seems like there's a conspiracy theory that they did it on purpose to create a viral meme for New Years and get more ratings.
