Re: Auto Play
@faryl: Indeed, for all of the talk and hype about how mobile video is the future, video content providers sure aren't making their video sites very mobile-user friendly.

Popularity features
"Prioritize trending or popular videos: Popular videos should be showcased at the top -- the most popular video should be the first one the site visitor sees."

I'm not so sure about this tidbit.  I for one get pretty tired of alway seeing the same "popular" feature highlighted on the page when I'm not the least bit interested in it.

Should it not instead feature what's trending with people with similar watching patterns to my own?

Or, better yet, go back to Netflix's old system of making intelligent recommendations based upon how I rate content.  Too bad nobody seems to do that anymore (least of all Netflix).

Re: Auto Play
@Adi - That's interesting. I guess I'm not normal. Who knew? I tend to get more frustrated when the video isn't playing and I'll click it then just to see what the video is about. If it's already playing, I'll happily just watch in silence until it bores me.

Re: Auto Play
@faryl - you are SOOO right! Mute needs to be used. I also hate when randomly a video just opens on my phone - why? and the sound starts playing with everything else on my phone on silet - while I'm in the middle of doing something silent. I don't really like my phone making noise unless I want it to, I keep my ringer on silent at all times. So when it just starts making noise, I really just want to throw it far far away.

Re: Categorization
@ms. akkineni - You're right, I think a lot of services are still using genre categorization. Maybe because it's familiar to the audiences? But I've also seen a lot of cross over too, which is something an OTT service has advantage of over say your old "Blockbuster Video" options. Especially with less popular titles. Still, I think there are probably algorithms that can pull information from a persons other online habits and use that to offer a better listing of possible preferred title than just generic genre's. When I signed my grandparents up for Netflix I honestly felt a little lost just because most of the movies weren't movies that they had seen, so I just kind of had to guess at it. Not that they are overly computer savvy, so I'm not sure any algorithm could have solved my dilemma, but it would have been nice. :-)

Re: Categorization
@ms.akkineni  - Definitely, I think data and analysis is probably the key to any effective customer relationship. We've gone from a limited list of content offerings to hundreds and thousands now, so personalization and navigation is increasingly important. And the basis for personalization is collecting enough data and having the right analytic tools to create the right profiles.

@faryl - they get more people to click if the video is already playing -- maybe curiousity, to see what is really happening.

I'm a fan of sites that offer transcripts to their videos. My attention span is significantly shorter for watching than reading and I like to be able to skim through and pick out the salient points for me.

Re: Auto Play
Mute is vital. Even sitting at home, I hate opening links in new browser tabs and then having to figure out which one is playing the sound!
