F5' s Interesting Move

Pretty interesting move by F5. What looks impressive is F5's initiative to reevaluate its current vision and realigning itself with a more market driving vision to focus and invest into security. Enterprise wide security has become a real key due to cloud. Briging Mr. Convertino seems to be a smart strategic move. His credentials look very promising thinking of what F5 envisioned him for.

Re: F5' s Interesting Move
ms.akkineni, I fully agree.  His military intelligence background adds weight as well.

I am particularly interested in F5's focus, as Mike points out, on reinventing themselves and generating a new cycle of services in a mature market.  I believe that is what smart companies will do and will keep moving up the food chain in solving customers' problems.

Security is an excellent focus for anyone at the present.

@DHagar: Complete ly in agreement with you. Looking at how Cloud services / Solutions are becoming front runners of enterprise market, next big bet is Security. I see lot of companies are reevaluating their current security models to make sure they are upto speed. F5 is really proactive with this new move. Looking forward for F5's accomplishments in this area in near future.

Re: F5' s Interesting Move
I add my voice and welcome this development.    I do continue to wonder why it took so long for the realization to be realized--but the engagement is refreshing.    This is as we're at the "cusp" of the explosion with iOT as we'll be witness to 34 Billion devices by 2020.

Re: F5' s Interesting Move
mpouraryan, maybe not everyone truly believed it would evolve.

Actually, I think the data/analytics and cloud platforms enable the connectivity for IoT that really delivers value.  Then the obvious elephant in the room is security.  People won't connect to small islands exposed to security risks, they will trust a source with a platform that is connected and provides top line security.

I view it as our responsibility to maintain the "dialogue" and keep the level of tempo necessary for this to evolve.   We're not there yet.

mpouraryan, excellent point and I fully agree.  That is why information - and remaining knowledgeable about industry developments (i.e., Telco Transformation) are invaluable.  Knowledge is power and the collective dialogue enables us to evolve further.

I would agree that we are not there yet.

Being Captain Obvious here, but whichever vendor can provide unified security options (at the access layer?) to manage IoT and BYOD devices is going to have a huge leg up.

For sure, fearless Leader--but as I see it, the closest one in the running will be Google--whether they can pull it off is a different question right now.

Re: F5' s Interesting Move
I'm wondering at what level the security will exist... Intel and Tanium are working on a chip-level solution for IoT security because that might be the only common point for a diverse range of IoT devices.

If they can figure it out.. there will be an incredible boost to every bit of tech gadgetry. But if only Intel has it... I wonder how ARM-based devices and other hardware will adapt.

Re: F5' s Interesting Move
ms.akkineni, indeed - they definitely understand the market.  If F5 can now demonstrate the value of Security, I believe they will create a lot of interest in their business model.  The ability to make Security a top focus may make them highly competitive and a market leader.

CISO answers to...?
Does Convertino answer to the CIO... or does he answer to CEO McAdam, the CFO, the board, or...?

I ask because there is a lot of debate as to to whom the CISO should answer to because of the conflict of interest between the CIO's role and the CISO's role.

Re: CISO answers to...?
Joe, I just received confirmation that Mike Convertino reports directly to the CIO who, in turn, rolls up under the COO's organization.

@Mike: Which is usually the case -- although it is something that pundits are beginning to rethink as conflicts of interest between the CIO's bottom line and the CISO's bottom line become more apparent.

Thanks for checking!
