Seen & Heard: Huawei & Proximus Trial 1.1 Gig Speed on Live NetworkOn Monday, Huawei and Proximus announced a successful demo of a 1.1 Gbit/s connection speed on a live mobile network. Proximus , which is a mobile telecommunications service provider in Belgium, used Huawei's 4.5G platform in the trial. The companies said that the trial speed was a first for Belgium. Huawei and Proximus announced a partnership last year. While some telcos are racing towards 5G, Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. sees 4.5G as an interim step along the way. Telcos could tap into 4.5G to meet the bandwidth demands of more smartphones, IoT applications, wearables and connected cars. (See Huawei Outlines Big Initiatives for Digital Transformations.) The two companies said the demo could also be viewed as the initial step towards enabling 1 Gbit/s mobile video across all of Belgium, but that would entail a further build-out of the network. "At Proximus, we believe the abundance of applications will require higher network performance in terms of speed, latency and number of simultaneous connections," said Proximus CTO Geert Standaert, in a prepared statement. "In a world where everything will be connected, we want to continue offering the best mobile user experience, and we are delighted with the successful testing of 4.5G technology with our partner Huawei." — Mike Robuck, Editor, Telco Transformation |
