Re: Is real-time data that much better?
Two contradicting thoughts on this.....

One, I could see how it would help get producers quick information (we want information and we want it yesterday!) They could see if a storyline is or isn't working, and potentially change it for the following week (though they tend to film way in advance and that could be a pricey move depending on how much change was needed.) But, maybe that could make or break a show?

Or..... it doesn't matter. All that comes to mind is New Girl. Not sure if you watch it or not, but they had Megan Fox on last season, and they've decided to bring her back next season. Repeatedly, week after week, the comments on the show boards are filled with people who confess their undying hatred of Megan Fox. Yet, despite the large fan base complaining of leaving the show (viewership) and great dislike for Megan Fox, they continue to bring her back on the show. So I honestly don't even know anymore how much producers really care about audience likes or dislikes. It's almost like they are going to do what they want to do, no matter what.

Is real-time data that much better?
I'm just curious if the real-time data is actually much more valuable than existing data. Twitter comments of a show or focus groups seem to be a "good enough" way to measure how a show is doing with an audience. Does "real-time" data really change that much?

I suppose for a real-time reality TV show.. it does. But I don't watch that kind of TV.

Exactly. I don't think Netflix is really doing THAT well with all the data it collects. Sure, there's a bit of an edge to pick what series might be popular, but execution is still the key. I don't care how many people loved "Full House" -- if/when "Fuller House" writers don't deliver an entertaining show, no one will contine watching it.

Data
I find it very interesting the way Netflix is developing shows. They have had some hits – but I'm not sure if it will sustain the way that TV executives can come up with entirely new concepts. Bottom line: The technology is interesting, but it still requires human creativity.
