Years of talk, and now.... the survival instinct kicks in
For as long as I can recall, operators and vendors have bene talking about 'agile' and real-time, automated operations.
Now, though, there is a very real and strong business imperative to actually do something -- and some operators are leading the way, often starting with their BSS and IT systems.
For those that have not even contemplated such revamps, it might already be too late to start thinking about it.
OPerator and vendors are going to go out of business as the industry transforms -- the big questions is -- who gets to survive?

But always a place for fixed infrastructure...
I'm fascinated with the change and the pace of change in telco. But, I also believe that non-sexy, nuts-and-bolts network infrastructure, and especially the cables that connect everything, will continue to be critical assets. There's only so much you can virtualize away.
More than capex and opex
More than saving on capex and opex, telcos need technology and business processes in place to deliver new products and services with the agility customers require.

Re: But always a place for fixed infrastructure...
@msilbey I could not agree, as plain vanila setup is more easy to fix or figure it out if something goes wrong....

@LightRay I would say this days when everyone get latest and greatest, but forgeting going back to basics... of easy and simple way... it like same with new cars... to fix it you need to change whole block/segment where part located... not anymore just changing simple part...

Re: More than capex and opex
It is just a matter of attitude and outlook. If we decide to be "overwhelmed" then it becomes complicated. But if we embrace change and accept it, thereafter there should not be any problems--this s what drove the creation of the iPOD in 2005, the iphone in 2007 and the resulting Party Apple has had--despite the fact that it has hit some rough patch.

Re: More than capex and opex
What is clear is that they're on their way especially with AT&T Digital Life (for instance). This is part of the evolution and they have no choice in the matter--do they? It is frankly a matter of life and death--and AT&T has already been transforming its' Cables for instance to be ready for bandwith--for instance AT&T's 75 Mb/second service for residential services.

We are in a time were everytinh is going virtual and I know because I have experience being a virtual assistant online with certian companies doing administrative work like data entry researching and customer serice, hepl desk positions so I thinlk it's great in a way.
