Google Casts Wider Net With Chromecast RebrandGoogle announced Tuesday morning that it was changing the name of its Chromecast application to "Google Cast" in an effort to show that it has morphed beyond its initial dongle phase. Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) launched the low-cost Chromecast stick three years ago to compete against other streaming media players and devices, including Fire TV, Roku and Apple TV. Google has expanded the technology across a wider range of devices, including TVs, displays and speakers. In September, Google rolled out Chromecast 2 and launched Chromecast Audio at the same time. Along with the name change, Google announced that the Cast technology was now being used in VIZIO’s new SmartCast P-Series displays as well as in its soundbars and speakers. Google also said it had launched a new website to support Google Cast. The updated Google Cast app will start rolling out this week on iOS and Android devices.
