Re: NSF on 5G
@DHagar. I agree. They definitely did their research and picked the right time to start researching. NSF understands the importance of developing strategic partnerships. With help from 28 companies, and the  four major US wireless companies the research should be lengthy and of high qualityl

Funding
Hopefully government funding that NSF receives is not cut during this administration. This research is greatly needed and will truly help propel the 5G initiative.

Global 5G
Since NSF is a globally known agency it will also help to bring awareness to the U.S. and hopefully increase the U.S.'s ranking as a technology leader. Although I am still surprised that the U.S. lags behind in some technology areas.

5G taking hold
>In Salt Lake City, the site will focus its research on dynamic spectrum sharing and advanced wireless antenna technologies.<

I really like this bit. Hopefully it will lead to a larger 5G signal range and faster, higher bandwidth networks. I've got my fingers crossed for those improved antennas.

Let's hope such exciting deveelopments survives in the age of Trump.    That's the profound challenges right now as there seems to be minimal regard for science.

Re: NSF on 5G
I have to agree this is an exciting development. It's certainly the stuff of sci-fi movies but with real value. Novelty technology usage is so common that something like this really stands above.

Re: NSF on 5G
This is not just exciting news about the adaption of cool tech but potentially life-saving!

<Some of the specific goals it hopes to achieve include enabling first-responders and surgeons to share real-time data during emergencies, training entry-level workers via immersive, virtual reality systems, and providing seamless communication between vehicles and roadway infrastructure to reduce traffic congestion.>

That could make all the difference between some people making it in time to save a life and arriving just a minute later.

Re: NSF on 5G
@afwriter, it appears to me that they have done their homework well and have identified key public infrastructure platforms that will drive the use of 5G and enable the breakthrough use cases that will make it feasible.  I really like their design of the platforms, the training, etc., that is a smart roadmap for developing the 5G markets.
