Re: Lackluster speeds in the US...
So you're saying there are other issues with LTE speeds elsewhere? I am shocked (not really)!

Re: Lackluster speeds in the US...
mhhf1ve,

Norway has some pretty horrendous logistical problems -- a scattering of small cities and towns in a narrow band almost as long as either of the main American coasts (or from Lake Ontario to the Gulf of Mexico, as this very nicely done graphic shows). Add to that high mountains, deep fjords, and really awful weather, and being folded around at the top (so that you've got to either link through Sweden or go hundreds of km out of your way).  And although a slightly less clever graphic points out that South Korea would fit between San Franciso and LA, note that they have similar logistic/topographic problems to countries that they're roughly comparable in size to (about 1/3 the size of Germany, nearly the size of England without Scotland, Wales, or Cornwall).   Yet those nations come in well ahead of the pack.  I think logistical differences are probably more excuses than they are real differences.

Re: Lackluster speeds in the US...
Thanks for doing that digging, vnewman. I wonder what Nokia is doing to push things along in the EU, then, if anything? Fragmentation was also a problem for 4G, and it still sort of is. But it's probably magnified even more for 5G with all the different kinds of spectrum and tech that's getting rolled into the "5G" name.

Re: Lackluster speeds in the US...
I did some digging and it seems that even Nokia’s CEO is concerned about the (lack of) a cohesive 5G plan in the EU - Nordics aside Here’s a few links to articles explaining why. The gist I got was “fragmentation” is the issue. https://eandt.theiet.org/content/articles/2018/02/5g-could-rollout-this-year-nokia-ceo-predicts-but-europe-lags-behind/ http://www.cityam.com/281705/5g-race-but-europe-lagging-behind

Are Nordic countries lagging behind in 5G? Isn't Nokia doing some 5G deployments in Europe?

I wonder if the vast LTE reach and the above-average 4G speeds in Europe have anything to do with all of Europe collectively lagging behind in the 5G race?

Lackluster speeds in the US...
> "Singapore leads the world in speed, followed by the Netherlands, Norway and South Korea, all of which average above 40 Mbit/s. The US ranks 62nd in LTE speeds, with an average speed of only 16.31 Mbit/s."

The US is trailing by quite a bit.. and I assume it will continue to do so for quite some time, despite FakeNews PR reports saying otherwise. Smaller nations have an easier logistical problem to solve, but the US doesn't have anywhere near 50Mbps speeds in major cities from what I see.

5G Skyrockets
To me 5G has has a lot to offer for cell phaone data usage but the part I don't like is that it decreases to meagabytes maybe if it will stay at 4G we probably would  not have some problems and we will might not need the 5G. But 5G seesms to have a lot to offer for many countries and businesses that are interested in it.
