Huawei 5G Vision
A few companies and countries are hip to 5G because of what they have to offer like more data of course and usage in the virtual world so with Huawei getting their ideas will make it more interesting.

Re: Huawei 5G Vision
I recently started doing some work for a Robotics Automation Software company and am learning that the implementation of 5G is critical to facilitate interaction and interoperability of humans and robots especially in factories and warehouses: “The fifth generation of wireless technology will pave the way for a new generation of robots, some free to roam controlled via wireless rather than wired communications links and exploiting the vast computing and data storage resources of the cloud. Armed with these capabilities, robots can be precisely controlled dynamically in near real time, and be connected to people and machines locally and globally. In short, 5G will fully enable applications such as the "factory of the future" and many, many others that were previously beyond the capabilities of both cellular and robotics technologies.” Source: Mouser.com

Re: Huawei 5G Vision
@vneman that fits perfectly with what Ron Marquardt, Vice President of Technology, Sprintwrote here  last December:

We will see that 5G will really drive a whole new set of use cases beyond the smartphone that have not been possible before. For example, in the case of cloud robotics the intelligence of the robot is located in the cloud, while the body of the robot carrying the mechanical functionality can be somewhere else. They would be linked together by 5G-based wireless connectivity.

There is apparently a name for this combination of robotics, cloud computing, and 5G: “The Robotics Renaissance” - a term coined by Swedish infrastructure vendor Ericsson.

@vnewman  I feel somewhat troubled by this "factory of the future." Soon it won't be just about factories but about every job humans have ever done, even tasks performed by professionals, such as surgery, teaching, etc ... AI scares me quite frankly. No wonder everyone is in such a hurry to get 5G off the ground.

@srfolo1 - scary indeed. Think of the possible tag lines going something like this: “Imagine a different kind of workforce. A workforce that you can teach countless skills. The more it learns, the more efficient it becomes. It works without ever taking a vacation. It can be small one day or large when your business hits a spike. And it frees up your best people to really be your very best people. Meet the Software Robots – the Digital Workforce.“ Now here’s the truly scary part: this is for real! A real ad. Real software. Real robots. It’s all happening quietly beneath our noses.

@vnewman This is just creeping up on us, slowly and we are basically unaware of what's really happening. It's all about lies. We are not being "freed up" to do better jobs. We are being phased out. What is our future really? Will we even have a culture anymore?

@srufolo1 - I tend to think more along the lines of a future like the movie Surrogates. Where we all sit in our homes and get fat and lazy and send them out into the world for us to do jobs that we wouldn't want to do outside of in a video game.

@elizabethv Perfect assessment! And we'll all die of heart disease and other ailments that go along with just sitting around doing nothing. I wonder who the paycheck will go to though? And who will be writing the checks?

All great questions to which there are no easy answers I believe beyond the fact that jobs that require an extreme amount of versatility and adaptation to a wide variety and quickly-changing circumstances will be the ones left to humans. For example - preschool teacher s one that comes to mind.

In other creepy news, a Redwood, California based company, revealed the world’s first completely automated drone. The Skydio R1 is an AI-powered autonomous drone that flies all on its own. It locks on to a subject (like yourself, going on a run) and follows along through trees and obstacles, without losing track using 13 cameras.

@vnewman  Wow, that is a little creepy. I was just reading about a robot that can do something, I think it was in warehousing or something like that, which is definitely going to replace a lot of human jobs. It's getting spooky.

Robots and 5G

That is amazing. I hadn't considered 5G and robots but it makes sense. Using the cloud, 5G and wireless technology with robots is awesome. Plus IoT and AI are used with robots. I am curious if security will be implemented in robots or will they eventually run wild like the movie "I, Robot".

Looking on the bright side - think about all the implications of using this technology in dangerous environments: factories where they are using dangerous chemicals in productions, nuclear plants, etc. Send in the clowns? No send in the robots!

I am always curious how people create new terms like robotics renaissance. It is so interesting. Robotics renaissance with help increasing affordability of robotics technology. It can also help small business owners and startups become more competitive.

@freehe  Yes, who comes up with these terms like "Robotics Renaissance," and political terms like "Dreamers," etc ... I wonder the same thing. The idea of robots roaming around wirelessly scares the bejesus out of me though.

5G and Robotics
Companies have jobs that they are not filling due: to greed, corruption, stagnant wages, increaesed work loads. Renaissance robotics can help the job market but I don't believe it will increase skilled labor. I believe it will decrease skilled labor.

With millions of people still unemployed and underemployed, these numbers will increase as the usage of robots increases.

Jobs will change but that change will have multiple outcomes: employees will learn new skills, employees will quit, or employees will be laid off.

This will have a cripple effect on the economy and will increase unemployment. This will result in more crime across the country and affect employees ability to make retirement account contributions.

Re: 5G and Robotics
We are already seeing it as unskilled jobs across the world are being replaced by computers. I saw it in Spain when the entire McDonalds was running with two employees. One of my local McDonald's just added the kiosks but they were still fully staffed. I was just thinking that the old "McDonald's is always hiring," idea is a thing of the past thanks to automation.

@afwriter - It truly makes me wonder what kinds of jobs my kids will be able to get as teenagers. A lot of parents plan their children's futures on them being able to get a job once they reach a certain age. I started working when I was 14. If McDonald's is running all automated, what jobs will teenagers of the future hold?

Amazon.com uses 100,000 robots in their warehouses. If you shop with Amazon you may have noticed that your orders are processed faster, shipped faster and you receive your order in less time.

I order from Amazon and in the past it could take up to 2 weeks to receive an order. Now it takes less than one week to process, ship and deliver the order. I suspect this is due to the M&A or Amazon and Whole Foods. Amazon wants to streamline processes, reduce operational costs and increase profit. Robots help them meet  those goals. Amazon claims that it still hires employees in addition to using robots. Curious to see how long that trend lasts.

Re: 5G
@freehe - I really think our society as a whole not only needs to be looking at and talking about these issues, but making voices heard. The economy can't survive with almost no one working. I get that the rich can get really really rich using robots and not paying out for labor, but what will those of use who aren't on the right end of that game do for a living? I still say Japan has the right idea here, by not allowing technology to replace a person in a job. Otherwise, we're on the fast road to serfdom and we'll be there a whole lot faster than most anyone wants to admit.

Huawei, with all of its partnerships throughout the world, seems to be at the forefront of 5G technology. I'm sure we will be hearing a lot from this company at the MWC in Barcelona.
