Re: Huawei Wins World's First Tier IV-Ready Certification
I think it’s better to keep the government and that news out of the way for new technologies. I don’t know how possible that is, but it complicates things. More than they are already.

Re: Huawei Wins World's First Tier IV-Ready Certification
@mhhf1ve: Another astute comment. On the issues of cost and quality, Huawei has made its point convincingly and won in Europe. There is no way it is going to make progress under the current administration. It is not about country of origin as much as the regime in China which is a problem for its citizens and Chinese business overseas not only in the US but also increasingly in India. AT&T has already dropped Huawei and more will follow because the Government will not do business with any company that has Huawei equipment. I suspect that is going to extend to Europe and the world. Huawei plans to use the same approach that was successful in Britain where it has a lab test done. I will be very surprised if this Government buys that case. I am afraid that could mean the end of this gig.

Re: Huawei Wins World's First Tier IV-Ready Certification
@mhhf1ve Oh, now we subject people to harrassment at random. I haven't flown internationally since forever. On our return from our first plane trip abroad this past week, we got an x on our print out when we scanned our passports. We are American-born citizens with nothing to trigger any problem. But we were directed to the long, slow line that included all those with X -- mostly those with passports other than American ones. No one explained anything, and we had to wait a full hour for our turn with the police officer that lasted less than a minute because -- unlike with the other people who usually get on that line-- he asked us not a single question. He just had us remove our glasses (I guess to better match the photo for which they also tell you to remove our glasses) glanced at us and the passports and allowed us through. I demanded to know why we were flagged. He said it was just because Brown is a common last name. Really, that's all the explanation we got for being put through a line that never progressed much because most people ahead of us were detained much longer and a good portion of them were escorted away, which meant that window closed. So much for rights of citizenship and effective security checks.  If we posed a threat, there should have been more involved, and if not, detaining us at random is just window dressing to try to prove they are not profiling and don't mind inconveniencing citizens for no other reason than to put on a guise of no discrimination.

Ideally, we would progress to the point where "Chinese" companies and people weren't automatically under suspicion for espionage without any kind of evidence. We're not there yet. At least we're not rounding people up based on their national origin anymore....

@mhhf1ve yes, I do think we will progress to that at some point. The question is if it will take just a few years or longer.

Re: Huawei Wins World's First Tier IV-Ready Certification
That *is* interesting news. I assume Huawei will find more productive uses of its investments in helping to nail down networking standards so that they can't be left out of the deployments entirely. Maybe they'll even sneak their tech into white boxes, so that US companies like AT&T will still use Huawei products, but without the labels that might bring further scrutiny or political backlash.

I can imagine someday Apple could use Huawei tech just as it uses Samsung's... with minimal political fallout.

@afwriter This report, https://www.wsj.com/articles/ericsson-humbled-by-huawei-takes-another-1-8-billion-in-charges-1516104065?mod=searchresults&page=1&pos=2,  agrees with you. It says: "Huawei is now the world's biggest seller of the networking gear at the center of modern mobile communications—even though it hasn't made much headway in U.S." And for its competitors, it says:

"the challenge, European and U.S. telecommunications executives have said, is that Huawei offers a broader range of products, often at lower prices."

"We're not going to beat them on costs, to be honest. There's no chance. They have both scale and lower production costs," Ericsson Chief Executive Börje Ekholm said in a November interview. "We need to beat them on innovation."

@mhhf1ve Assuming this is real news, there's some interesting insight on the direction Huawei has decided to take to improve its position in the US from Retuers here: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-usa-telecoms/huawei-zte-cut-lobbying-spending-but-find-other-ways-to-spread-influence-idUSKBN1FB30K

Hopefully the current government shut down will serve to remind them that they have better things to do than block commerce.
