Re: Moving to 5G
@Ariella, thanks for info.  That is very interesting.  I believe, however, that if he moves that direction he may actually inhibit growth and create too narrow of a channel that works against market development.  It will certainly be interesting to watch!

Re: Moving to 5G
@mhhf1ve well, there there was a report that Musk was intent on developing his own AI chips. See https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/12/08/elon_musk_finally_admits_tesla_is_building_its_own_custom_ai_chips/

So I think that may indicate taking greater control over data, as well.

Re: Moving to 5G
@dawrey I wasn't familiar with it either until I had the interview. He explained the applications very clearly, I thought.

Re: Moving to 5G
@dcawrey, I agree - that could truly be transformative!  And it really makes sense to centralize the science expertise in robotics with the networked existing development and applications offered through the cloud.

Re: Moving to 5G
@mhhf1ve, which could be the best outcome yet?  It appears the power to dominate - whether market-driven or policy - moves players into a narrow-interest mode that diminishes value.  The balanced unleashing of alternatives through a wider-competitive environment appears to offer the most promising future.

Re: Moving to 5G
Tesla is gathering a ton of driving data (Google already has), so I'm sure the cloud robots will be cars first. Then maybe we'll have to watch out for Boston Dynamics....

Re: Moving to 5G
But I suppose if rockets get cheap enough, then there may be a fragmentation of connectivity-- with private internets with various kinds of service levels. Net neutrality could go out the window if satellite broadband is commonplace (and doesn't interfere with each other).

@mhhf1ve, excellent assessment!  I agree that it most likely will develop internationally.  It will be an exciting future.
