Re: Moving to 5G
It's possible there might be a non-proprietary rocket system someday. There have been some crowdfuded rocket projects. And Copenhagen Suborbitals is building a "homemade" rocket system on a relatively minuscule budget. Considering how fast North Korea has progressed in in rocket technology-- I'm sure there will be more rockets from unexpected sources, too. https://copenhagensuborbitals.com

Re: Moving to 5G
@mhhf1ve, true.  Plus, there is a key point that the ability to successfully fund and launch satellites is not widespread.  One wonders if there will not be an open platform satellite (ie the development of the internet) or if it will all be proprietary?

Re: Moving to 5G
SpaceX famously filed for very few patents related to their rockets. But they seem to have patented satellite tech for global broadband

Re: Moving to 5G
@mhhf1ve, great info!  I would imagine that would be true.  I used to work for Martin Marietta (now Lockheed/Martin), and the industrial giants, and entrepreneurs would not relinquish the leadership role to a SpaceX easily.

I think there will probably be new solutions from the more entrepreneurial start-ups with patents, new ideas, etc., that may develop the breakthroughs.

Re: Moving to 5G
SpaceX has competitors in the space race to get LEO satellites delivering broadband internet -- and these competitors aren't too keen on letting SpaceX build up its network quickly. I just googled and found out that there are about a dozen companies trying to launch LEO satellites for wireless broadband, and a few of them are trying to block SpaceX from getting around some of the FCC rules.

@mhhf1ve, his loss!

Well there is an interesting point.  You are right, they will have to develop a solution under the radar screen and/or open up an entirely new vista.

Re: Moving to 5G
Haha! I think Musk probably has teams with more ideas than I have. I'd be surprised if they're not already a few steps ahead of everyone with wireless global broadband plans. I just wonder how they're going to get around the spectrum problem. They can't exactly buy up licensed spectrum without anyone noticing.... So maybe they're going with lasers/masers?

@mpouraryan, well said - and that is the key.  It is a much bigger world out there to consider; we will have to see if he does.

The reporting by DealBook this morning underscored your point on how he was apparently Hamstrung by both his father and his other Brother.    The problem, though, is the emerging competition and how it all will "Work itself' Out.
