Re: Smart Cities
@afwriter - I would think that's really the biggest issue with letting machines take over too many aspects of our society. There has to be a point where algorithms, as well intentioned as they may be, just aren't weighing in aspects that need to be considered. I'm sure there are a group of extremely logical programmers out there that might disagree, but I would imagine the majority of us agree.

Re: Smart Cities
As your point indicates, no matter how good AI and machine learning get machines will never have morals which is why there are certain professions that machines will never be able to take over and why we need to be wary of letting machines take over our lives.

Re: Smart Cities
@afwriter - I just ran across this article on self-driving cars. It really only confirms my fear. But it's nice to see that at least according to this statistic, I'm in the majority with my doubt on self-driving cars.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2017/11/23/self-driving-cars-programmed-decide-who-dies-crash/891493001/

The premise is that no-win situations will unfold in self-driving cars, and the decisions will have to be made, save yourself, place the lives of kids over the lives of adults, save the lives of those in your car, kill animals? Even the idea of running over a squirrel because they are "inconsequential" in the world, bothers me. I have been passionate about animals since my childhood. I have literally never hit an animal of any kind. And that isn't a record I have any kind of desire to break. I will go out of my way to avoid hitting an animal. The only decision I would make over saving an animal is saving my own kids. But realistically, anyone buying a car is probably going to want to hear that the car will save the occupants of their vehicle over all else. But this isn't necessarily the decision even the very same individual would make while driving. Many people, if faced with the choice of hitting a school bus full of kids or hitting a tree, would choose hitting a tree. Even if hitting the tree woud just about guarantee the loss of your life over hitting the school bus. Most of us are hard-wired to protect the lives of kids. They argue that overall, self-driving cars will decrease the number of fatalites while driving. And I fully believe this is true. But I still don't want to make the switch.

Re: Smart Cities
I live in Minnesota where our seasons are winter, more winter, and road construction so I feel your zipper merge complaint in my heart. As far as smart cities without smart cars, I think that it can and will happen. It will be interesting to see if it is ever a requirement to own a self-driving car or if drivers will retain their right to drive.

Change
"We need to push towards single portals, continue to understand that we have to change our processes to make a difference for the digital economy that wants us to be more agile, more assured and more orchestrated with the products and services that we put forward on the network."

Verizon's CEO gets it. Change it a good thing. More companies need to educate their employees that change is necessary. The only way for companies to grow and remain competitive is to change.

Standards
"From my vantage point, if we look at the needs of our customers across the globe it's really the genesis of the project of interoperability," he said. "What do we need to do to is push more standards.

I am glad the CEO mentioned standards. More companies need to push for more standards across all industries and technology areas. It would help to solve some of the problems however standards alone do not solve all problems.

Verizon Application Aware
"We believe this is a big push for us to make certain we continue to connect people, places and things," Cevis said. "We want to give them the best of both worlds; making sure that they have a strong network at the end of the day but also have the performance and reliability beyond the Internet with what comes from a private IP network."

This is great. More people need to be connected especially in rural areas and underserved areas. It is an addiction, the more people get be connected, the more they want to be connected.

Customers also want reliable service from their ISP providers. This is something Comcast struggles with for residential customers.

Re: Smart Cities
@afwriter - oh good grief - why is the zipper merge such a foreign concept to so many people? It seems so basic, and yet so many people screw it up every.single.time. Smart cities that could address the merging problem have a big thumbs up from me. Though not self-driving cars. That scares the daylights out of me. Where do I sign for a smart city without self-driving cars?

<I'm a paranoid person, but not generally a 1984 paranoia kind of paranoid. >

Hahaha, I hop back and forth on that one, sometimes I'm 1984 paranoid. At the same time I can see so many benefits of smart cities (in theory) I'm sure better traffic lights and self-driving cars which allow for a steady stream of traffic, especially merging, would pretty much eliminate traffic jams completely.
