Digital World Accept it or not
I think that almost everyone is on baord with the digital world.especially the young crew but the older generation.is stillost or they don't care for this new age technology. We have come along way from doing like paper appllications in person for jobs now everything is almost digital or online internet. I think it is mostly positive and maybe some negatives to it.

I feel like most major companies are getting on board, but it will be interesting to see if at least one big company dies thanks to a refusal to transform. I am guessing it will be more mid-sized and smaller businesses who think that the old way is working so there is no reason to change.

@afwriter, I am with you on this.  I think, however, there will be the temptation on other large companies to hold onto their legacy and profit-making technologies they have been successful with and slow to abandon and shift to the full digital transformations.

I really like his vision, especially the recognition that it will require leadership, not just adoption, to truly remain competitive.  I think that will distinguish the companies.

@afwriter - I think you're exactly right about the kind of company that won't survive the need to keep up with digital demands. It isn't a telco company, but there is a local plumbing resource company here in Denver, and I'm curious about the kind of business they do. My husband and I drove by it, so we decided to try to figure out how to get there (because we saw it from the freeway.) But I literally couldn't find it on Google. I didn't even know there was anything you couldn't find on Google. I tried every variation of the company's name (according to their sign) into Google, and came up with nothing. Maybe they have a niche clientele and Google isn't necessary for that clientele. Maybe they do great business. We did figure out how to get over there, but they were closed and I have no idea what their sales look like. But I think I'm still flabbergasted that they weren't on the internet.

That is definitely weird, you would think that they would at least show up in Yellow Pages online even if they didn't have their own website. Maybe it's a front company?

@afwriter - You're right, you'd think they would have been on Yellow Pages or something. But if they are, it isn't under the name they have on their sign. I didn't even think about the possibility of a front company, which is unusual, because I suspect those fairly often. I should drive by there on a weekday and see if they're actually open. Now I'm extra curious.

Hmm. Companies that don't need any kind of internet presence? I guess a plumbing supply distributor of some kind fits that bill. Also maybe a small mechanic repair shop. I've seen some of these kinds of small businesses around and I wonder how they survive,but I assume they can if they have enough word of mouth business. Not every company needs a website. I've seen plenty of local dentist offices that don't, but they'll still have yelp reviews.

clrmoney - You're not kidding about the older generation, or applications. My Dad is nearly 80 and decided he needed a new job. But every job required he apply online with an email address. He had to go to the library and have a helpful librarian help him create an email address and fill out the applications. After he got the job, there was a training he had to do on the computer. He refused. His manager talked him through the whole thing and selected all the responses he gave her. She even had to save his password in his file, because he told her he'll never remember it. He's very obviously got a pretty understanding manager. He's very obviously a cankanterous old man. Lol.

@elizabethv I'm laughing about your 80-year-old father who applied for and got a job without even having an email address or knowledge of how to use the computer. May I ask if they are still hiring? Every job I apply for tells me I am not qualified.

@srufolo1 - That's hilarious. He just works at Goodwill. I'm not sure who wouldn't be qualified for a job like that. He goes through all the books and puts the ones that he accepts on the shelves. Here's hoping they don't have to do a yearly computer training!

As someone who has peroidically been on the Job hunting "bandwagon", I will tell you that I have a special respect for all who work--because they have had to go thru quite a bit to land the position--and how Transformation has played a role in recruitriting --including online profile questions; Video Interviews and all that comes with it--I know because I've been through it--all have to adapt in order to maintain the Edge--right?

@mpouraryan - My husband is currently trying to find a new job, and he recently had to deal with an online personality test. Something we've both done before. I'm not a fan of them. I don't think there is anything to be gained from a vague test about someone's personality to show how they will be in the workplace. I am a confirmed introvert. An INTJ if we're going the Myer's-Briggs route. But I am well adapted to the workplace, and am more than capable of being an extrovert when needed. Since that's really the only way for an introvert to adeptly survive any team work environment. Just because an online personality test shows the personality I am most comfortable with, doesn't mean I don't have an understanding of how to navigate a working environment. Which you can't see in a personality test.

@Mike this is a key point! I'm sure that if you would have described how  today's telco businesses operate to just about anyone a decade ago, they would have recognized it as a telecom at all.

There used to be telcos and cablecos... and even CLECs.

But even CLECs aren't well defined anymore now that traditional carriers have merged and spun off and re-merged with some CLECs. eg. Level3 was just acquired by CenturyLink.

@mhhf1ve yes, it gets rather complex. Also certain combinations seem to be allowed, while others are not. So we have the state in which AT&T is told that it can only go ahead with the Time Warner deal if CNN is sold.

The combination of giant media companies and giant telco or cable companies is quite a complex mess. It's interesting that some mergers required net neutrality regulations to be followed for a set amount of time (but not indefinitely!). It seems unfair not to continue those kinds of restrictions for upcoming mergers.

What this startup Poly is doing is amazing. It would seem to make things more efficient, and the stick figure renderings are pretty cool. On another note, it might also serve to keep shoplifting at bay.

Alas, desperation doesn't always play into it. Friend of mine just got back from a business trip to one of the more crime-ridden parts of the country and told me about a conversation they overheard between two people talking about the sociopolitical moral imperative they felt to shoplift from Wal-Mart.

Granted, I wasn't there, but that might be a little much.

@Joe - No, it really makes a lot of sense when you boil it down. There is a genuine feeling, by at least a portion of the country, that Wal-mart, overall, takes more from a community and the country than they give. They're more of a hindrance than a help. Once you take on that line of thinking, you stop feeling like you stealing an item is really harming the business in anyway. It's a lot different (to some) to steal from a person they know, than a giant corporate behmouth that makes profits by paying their employees so little they have to exist on FoodStamps. (They have upped their pay game slightly in recent years.) Kind of like watching a pirated movie - you don't really feel like there's a victim in the crime. And as a former employee of Wal-Mart, watching them take the most ridiculous returns because at the end of the day, they could call it a loss and claim that on their taxes, it's kind of hard to feel bad for them. (Literally saw a guy buy all new camping equipment, then bring it back and return it the following week because it "wasn't what he wanted." Everything was CLEARLY used camping, and wreaked of campfire. He didn't even bother to brush any dust off. He essentially borrowed brand new camping equipment, and I mean the whole kit and caboodle, for free.) I struggle to find sympathy for Walmart when they have shoplifters. As do most of their employees, to be honest.

I would assert that the situation you mention (regulations that don't continue on) is a result of the people who control this country. Given that technically, it's the people with the money who are making the decisions. And the people with the money are the people who are effected by the regulations. So they work to control those regulations to their benefit, no matter what the human cost of that benefit is. The current net neutrality regulations, a gift from someone who previously worked for Verizon. Why wouldn't Verizon want to see net neutrality go away?

The Government has made it clear--and without getting too political, there is a lack of embrace of criticism--What is also interesting (since you noted it Ariella) is that Sky has threatened to shut down SkyNews to facilitate the proposed merger with 21st Century Fox--this is as SkyNews is playing in the background as I work away at my "Day Job" at the Daily Outsider today.

The participants on the panel made the message clear: Either adapt and keep up or become irrelevant. No one likes change, and it's easy to stay in that comfort zone, but digital transformation is happening quickly and customers are demanding all kinds of different things today. It truly is the Internet of Everything.

It is amazing how fast companies transform. Apple started out as a computer company and now offer that top selling smarrtphone in the country in addition to all the other ventures they are working on.

The playing field has been leveled and any company has the potential to capture any market if they have the resources and budget to do so.

Companies will no longer be labeled as a software company or telco as they will all be providing multiple services.

@freehe - This too I see as a result of our current society. Companies diversify to remain competitive and relevant. Though I think Apple's turn around as been more stunning than any other telco company. I still remember the big Apple computer's of my childhood, walking into the computer lab to go play Oregon Trail. Then, Apple seemed to fade away, until they came back with a bang and a vengence. My father-in-law is a huge Apple fan, he's obsessed. No one would have been obsessed with Apple 25 years ago.

@elizabethv, I totally agree. You cannot remain competitive without buying a company or doing an M&A. The market has changed so much. If companies don't change they will get left behind. It takes the right vision and leadership to remain competitive. It is tough for businesses to be innovative, remain competitive and keep customers happy all at the same time.

The purchasing process has changed significantly. Companies will have to shorten the time it takes to process orders, shipments and payments to keep up with the competition. Companies want to receive services quickly. Loyalty will no longer be a factor when purchasing products and services.

@afwriter - That is so true. And as much as I wish it wasn't true, I am horrible at this! Unfortunately, I just have too much going on to really even change this. My cell phone case broke yesterday, and I don't have the time to go to the mall. So I just ordered a new one on Amazon and I'm less than thrilled that it won't get to me until Tuesday. I have Prime. It's supposed to be 2 day shipping. I get the holiday and all, but 4 days from 2 is a little ridiculous. Which I totally get, is quintessential "1st World Problems." I suppose if it was really that bad, I could just go to the mall. But on my list of problems, it just isn't that important to drag 3 small kids to the mall for a new cell phone case. Convenience is likely the ruin of our society.

"The digital economy is running much faster than our internal business processes. Enterprises are always looking to connect with different service providers and cloud providers around the world. We need to move faster because the alternative is to be wiped out."

"We might be able to work with the 5G guys to leverage our requirements for end-to-end connectivity, but we may lose that if we are not fast enough," he said.

5G will help companies to process faster and deliver services faster. Albeit it will not solve all the problems companies experience.

Many companies that cannot keep up will go out of business and get bought out from larger companies. I suspect there will be M&As in the future.
