Lots of fiber
This merger puts a LOT of fiber under one roof company. I wonder how much the new combined entity plans to expand that network.

Re: Lots of fiber (Brief Thoughts)
It has been quite a week as we continue to be witness to mega-mergers--although I'd like to think about and reflect upon an apparent mega-merger that has hit a snag--as I congratulate the team at CenturyLink and their vision and roadmap....

It is true that they have made some key moves--but the challenge is for them is to sustain it for the long-term.

How do you envision this happening @bayte?   Sometimes we have to educate the customer that they have to "embrace" it--which is what Apple did with the ipod that grew into the iphone, right?

Re: Lots of fiber (Brief Thoughts)
@mpouraryan yes, but Apple create universe of Apple where iphone offered as all in one solution at the top of the cycle of technology... I would say yes to Apple way... but witout Apple restrictions and Apple price tag... and more simple and easy to have it and acsess it... I would say Raspberry PI but with smooth IOS version :) at the end...

I think you missed my point, @bayte--it is about having a vision in the end--and yes, I think your implicit point about Rasperry Pi and all the "newer ones" including the $ 9 Computer in and of itself has given us a window into the true art of the possible.....

@mpouraryan  maybe but the way I see it...  Apple create educated consumers while raking lots of money from consumers pocket... RPi making new generation of educated consumers willing to embrace new technology while learning it - thinkers wanting to create...

..and you're suggesting Apple is not--the Apple Ecosystem continues to be ever so vibrant on the creative end.  Yes, RPI is also just as vibrant--the challenge by the "big players' On all sides to help sustain it.

It has nothing to do with trust--but a sense of purpose to be able to make a difference in our lives--that's the challenge but there is an opportunity for it as well....

@mpouraryan for me it important to have trust in technology and people, Co. behind it ... as technology should be used to improve our lives, not to milk us out of money... I do not mind to pay for latest and greatest but I expect technology to be usable to me not restricted if I'm paying for it... the way I see it... but oportunity is always here as well :)

If you use this as a yard stick, though, then nothing is to be trusted--we have to use our common sense and good judgement always--that's where it all begins!!

Good thing the cultures between these two companies are compatible. I've heard horror stories on the exact opposite. Total culture clash.

It's got to be a fit or else you'll be stuck with an AOL Time Warner situation.

Re: Merger with Level 3
As someone who recently left Centurylink I am not entirely elated by the news. They have recently been sued by the MN Attorney General for their sketchy business practices which makes me a little wary that they will be in charge of Level 3 now.

@afwriter, I used to hear the same things about Comcast back when I covered cable. My focus is almost entirely on the techologies, but I think service providers are learning how important customer service and business practices are, especially in regards to video services now that we have so many OTT choices.

Re: Merger with Level 3
No need to apologize. You were a customer so you have the right to talk about your experiences. Going back to the technology, I think there's still a ways to go despite Hussain's optimism. A lot of this stuff is complicated to do in one network, let alone two that are being forged into a single platform.

CenturyLink's Hussain on Cultural Challenges
This merger with Level 3 makes CenturyLink a behemoth, and yet it wants to become more "nimble and agile." I think melding the two companies to create that "seamlessness" to customers will take some time. It may also not make CenturyLink take less time to deliver on things.

Re: CenturyLink's Hussain on Cultural Challenges
"We have not really extended our SDN networking overseas. We will test a few things in three or four countries. When that's available, the answer is yes."

Does anyone know why this is?  We used Level 3 for webinars and audioconferencing and whoever vetted the program didn't realize you could not orginate the call overseas.  I find it very strange and hope the merger will find a way to rectify that.
