Also, it's not a terribly well-publicized fact, but many content providers are well aware that the right advertisements can help attract people to your content (see, for example, the aspirational ads in The New Yorker, or some of the placement of "guy stuff" ads in sports broadcasts.) That's another form of locking up the local/intense appeal early in the process.

Attracting eyeballs and making them loyal viewers is key. Netflix grew on this strategy of making it easy to subscribe on almost any platform, so it gained eyeballs -- and it didn't even need to resort to advertising to those eyeballs. But I assume many OTT providers like Divan.TV will make ads part of their revenue stream -- especially since it targets such a focused demographic group.

I would love to hear more about their recommendation service. I think being able to cultivate and then point users toward content they like is a huge element to an OTT service succeeding.

Channel Stats?

I wonder how well these "channels" do? I may be wrong but these are more like streaming apps than something you can get through a cable package, right?

This is an interesting strategy for Divian. I get that is is a marketing strategy for both parties, but I feel like Divian is definitely getting the better end of the deal here.

I think there's also a significant first mover advantage to grabbing the local OTT streaming rights for the good stuff. It becomes more difficult for later entrants to find good content, and then either they spend a lot trying to get it or even more trying to make it -- or they just have a weaker product.

Once again we see that local high-interest content is vital to competitiveness for OTT providers.  Interesting that Divan.TV started with that perception right off the bat, and is doing so well with it. (Maybe even more interesting how many other OTT services either don't see it or are afraid of the costs of implementation).
