Re: Security Breach Story
I hope your break in story wins -- even though it's maybe a bit longer than the rules allow for. Doing your own police work deserves some kind of reward.

Security Breach Story
I just have a security puzzle for folks here. What will be a more secure username or login system in the future? I've know a few people with common names, like John Smith or David Lee, who continually get email reset links for other people with the same name. Apparently, other people sign up for accounts and enter the wrong email address like David.Lee@??mail.com and then they somehow get locked out of their own account because they don't have access to the email address they provided.

Re: Security Breach Story
@elizabethv You did all the legwork for the police, were diligent about finding a criminal, and they told you they couldn't do anything without the statement of people who sounded like criminals themselves? They all should have been arrested. Glad you got out of that neighborhood! You and your husband should have gotten a police escort to that guy's house and demanded your laptop back.

Re: Security Breach Story
I guess you could have used a desk behind a big metal door :) It's too bad nothing could be done about the laptop. I'm glad you were able to move out of the neighborhood -- it sounds like you made the right move.

Security Breach Story
We had our house broken in to one day while we were at work. But between two dogs (one of them very large [100+ lbs]) and an alarm, all they were able to get was my laptop that had sat right inside the sliding glass door they had broken in through. The police took their report and what not and we figured we'd never hear from them again. But the laptop was new and we didn't really have the money to replace it again so quickly (it was less than a month old.) So my husband did his own investigative work and walked around the neighborhood asking if anyone knew anything. Meanwhile, I was able to get a picture of the person who opened the laptop emailed to me from the security system that had come on the laptop. Neighbors across the street told my husband that they knew exactly who had broken into our house, but they wouldn't tell police because they had drugs and stolen guns on their property He also warned my husband not to have packages delivered to our home because they were watching our house for high dollar packages. Our next door neighbors told us the people were friends with the people across the street and frequently bought drugs from them. We were able to confirm this story by watching the comings and goings of the house and within a few days we saw the guy that was in the picture that had been emailed to me. We gave all of this information to the police, who said they still couldn't do anything, without the people we had talked to giving statements, which they refused to do. I broke down and bought a used laptop I still have five years later now, because I couldn't afford another new one..... and then we moved out of that neighborhood.

Security Anecdote

I've been lucky not to have had a security breach that destroyed my life. I only remember one. That was when my ATM card was hacked at a Bank of America about a dozen years ago. It is always a bit alarming when you see charges on your card from all over the place. In this case, charges were being made mostly in Canada. Luckily, the bank removed the charges and handled the situation appropriately.
