NVF Conversation
Hopefully it will be in a good way because NFV/network Function Virtulaization has a lot to offer so they should get on board.

The end of wastebasket repair?
Hadn't thought about this before as an aspect of NFV, but for the last few generations our technology has been morphing steadily into a set of black boxes with connectors. When a problem fell into a clear cut area the technician very often got it back on line with a wastebasket repair, i.e. disconnect old unit, place in wastebasket, connect new unit, test, approve, go.  Wastebasket repairs were quick, reliable, and required little training; NFV repairs are going to be a whole new game.

Re: The end of wastebasket repair?
If wastebasket repairs are that effective, I wonder how tech hardware will adapt. Perhaps it'll be more like all the software will be backed up in the cloud, so problematic hardware is replaced with the last known working version... remotely?

@mhhf1ve in my days it was overnight shipment to replace non-working failty part... but things do change with technology...

Re: The end of wastebasket repair?
mhhf1ve, batye,

Wastebasket repairs were usually effective but what they really were was cheap. Throwing a unit away got less and less expensive with time and the savings in training was huge.  What I suspect is that with networked NFV there will always just be some redundant boxes in every net that can pick up the load if one of the others fails. Then the failed one can be replaced at convenience. Ultimately I suppose it might be even cheaper -- only one kind of box and one kind of connector means the guy in the truck really doesn't need much training at all, and once the replacement is plugged in, everything is software -- including the things deciding what goes where and the things making sure the new one works.

Re: The end of wastebasket repair?
I was thinking it should be even cheaper if the software was done right. But if the software got really messed up by malware or something really evil, then it could get a lot more expensive.
