I always thought for OEMs this structure was enormously profitable. 

That being said, switching to open standards opens the box versus keeping it closed. It could be the end of a lucrative opportunity for some vendors.

I agree, it's not breaking news, but he felt it was important enough to include in a presenation to vendors, analysts and service provider employees. But it was just one element of a very deep dive. I found it interesting, but your mileage varies, I suppose. Check out Carol's story on the second-generation of VNFs for more deplth.

Yes, operating expenses are lower and easier to control as you move along the open-source spectrum.  That is why the world is going more and more open-source.  Pretty much everything in the interview is true, but is it really news other than to upper management?

Open Source Attacks
Open Source software can offer and function to do many things so I think they can take almost any challenge. There will be a lot more to come from this.

@Mike, great interview.  I like AT&T's understanding of open source as a spectrum and unlimited options for development and applications.  I think that distinction is also what limits some who like to follow existing developments only and/or are uncomfortable with open systems. 

They will soon learn that the space for restricted and limited developments are a shrinking piece of the pie.
