@elizabethv, good example! I believe Verizon is excellent at marketing and sales - now if they can continue to develop positive consumer packages and services, they will keep you and others and actually grow their customer base through performance. That would be a good thing for everyone.

I think we're in the earliest days of orchestration ....
... and like other basic concepts -- programming, software, app, reusability, etc. -- at the moment it's a concept that has room for a lot of things to develop inside it, partly because it's an aspirational name for what is so far mostly just simple flexible, intervenable traffic and workflow control.
The base level of orchestration in music is just making sure people can hear the main things they're supposed to. But the high level is making sure that they will hear them in a way that will please them most and let them discover as much as possible in what the composer wanted to say.
The analogy to that in NFV might be not just "good quick responsive just in time traffic control" but something more like "routing the subtasks with the most potential for discovery, innovation, and process improvement into the virtual servers most likely to discover, innovate, and improve processes." Or in short, we're just getting the hang of assigning notes to instruments. But we're creating the basis for AIs that can decide, on the fly, that the people would be best served, and get the most and best information, if they hear the melody from the French horn with the strings playing a soft descant. Ultimately, orchestration should become a tool for making the networks it serves -- not just the ones it runs on -- actually smarter and better at what they do, the way that a good book on a subject you know well, or a good performance of a symphony, play, or opera you know well, can deepen, expand, and change your understanding.

@DHagar - Verizon managed to sucker me back in even when I fully planned to leave this last month. If nothing else their sales people are moderately convincing. And they did give me a better rate on the Samsung S8 than I had found elsewhere, which was a big part of why I decided to stay. I'll just be sure to conduct more research and come to the table with more knowledge before I call to cancel next year when my husbands contract is up.

@dcawrey, I think you are right. Verizon recognizes the need to compete - maybe because of their new focus, investments, etc., but they are on the move and have the momentum.

It seems Verizon is staying flexible. The rigidity in the market seems to come from Comcast. Bad customer support and an undeveloped business offering.

@elizabethv, I agree with your assessment. Verizon will have to stay on top of that issue of pricing or others will beat them on price and copying their models. If Verizon stays flexible and adaptable they can remain the leader, if they think they have the market in their pocket they can easily lose because others will be competing in the future.

@DHagar - That is definitely the pattern for major change. And Verizon is poised to be that leader. They offer the best cell phone service in the industry, and they charge the most too. But others will definitely follow their lead.

@dcawrey, definitely true! The leaders have an open road to capture the most value and help set the standards.
You are right, the others will follow the trail they develop. I guess that is always the pattern for major change?

@DHagar I think what we're seeing is the most prepared organizations getting into the NFV world first. Everyone else will come onboard later when there are standards and process.

@dcawrey, I agree with your description. It is all driving toward the same vision - virtualization. And it truly requires preparation in the organization to deliver with these new technologies. It has to move beyond the typical application of technology with transactions.
