The metaphor that doesn't get enough attention
Orchestration, in music, refers to the allocation of musical functions between physical instruments -- does the oboe, the trumpet, or the violin have the melody? Do the horns play in unison, harmony, counterpoint, some mixture of all? The spare sound of a single flute or the full sound of several different woodwinds? Etc. etc. etc., depending on where we are in the piece and what the composer intends it to say. It's a complex, difficult problem, and not all composers are adroit at it, nor is every orchestra up to playing every orchestration.

There's a tendency to blur all that out when we start using "orchestrate" to refer to what groups of servers, computers, and dedicated devices do; we boil it down to "a person or an algorithm will decide what gadget gets what part of the task, and assign deadlines and goals for the parts." But the point of musical orchestration is to do things well and gracefully, the best assignments for the highest effects, not just to get it done. There's a world of difference between being a choreographer reaching to say/do something new, and a traffic cop with a jumped up title.

I always think that the more simpler, well thought out concept does the best.

Re: Potential Detourant
I feel like the ROI numbers for stuff like this just get out of whack anyways. How can you quantify revenue on something that really seems like it is still being experimented and trialed?

I get what @dcawrey is saying and I think it is a legitimate point, but at the same time companies are in the business of making money and cost savings has to be a priority.

@dcawrey but you do have to point out ROI to get buy-in from the peole in charge of budgets.

Re: Potential Detourant
Trying to sell a new technology stack as cost-saving can be dangerous. I know salespeople like to point out things like this during the early process, but it's just not a good idea. Justify the tech for what it can do, then care about any cost savings later. The deployment is going to be expensive, no way around it.

They are all in on SDN/NFV. I think a lot of service providers thought CAPEX/OPEX would be the big drivers at first. Both are still important but there's much more to SDN/NFV today

Potential Detourant
"Originally we all thought it's going to save money, and so on. But it's really hard to finance future savings by having current spend."

It will still probably end up saving money in the long run, but I wonder if sentiments like this will detour companies from automating now.

CenturyLink Automation and more
CenturyLink should have simpler things to make it better for them. I think it would be a great idea for them to have automation and networking etc.
