PAYG models..
I think the pay as you go pricing model sounds interesting for small or mid-sized businesses, but is it that attractive for large enterprises? The branding of PAYG models generally indicates a "discount" service provider, but maybe Amazon and its partners can overcome that reputation somehow?

Re: PAYG models..
The question that pops into my mind with a PAYG model is; Can it eventually come back to bite you in the butt? Will there be certain months where you were better off paying a flat rate?

I wonder if it evens out then anyhow -maybe the savings on the months where usage is less makes up for months when it's more. Seems like it might make it more difficult to plan budgets though.

@mhhf1ve, I agree. This is great for small businesses who need the services but can't afford to pay enterprise prices. Offering no upfront commitments and no upfront equipment really helps level the playing field for small and medium sized companies.

Level 3 teaming with AWS
AWS/Amazon web services has a lot to offer with excellent customer service and they products they sell etc. So Level 3 wanting to be apart of them is great for more options to come.

<After reaching $35 billion in 2015, the unified communications market is forecast to reach $96 billion by 2023 with a projected CAGR of 13% from last year to 2023, according to Global Market Insights.> That's quite an increase! I hope someone does a follow up that year to see if the numbers prove accurate.

Ariella, I've just set a reminder on my iPhone to check back when we get there. :)

mhhf1ve He cited several examples for pay as you go. A research project with another company, a sub group that doesn't use it every month. How much enterprises take advantage of the pay as you go model remains to be seen, but I think the prospect of saving money is appealing to them, along with it being cloud-based, etc.

In the meantime, we could just see what people predicted for 2017 and write a slew of articles from there. Prognostication is a big market, after all.

And in 2020, there'll be tons of comparison to do with IoT projections... (link)

Re: Level 3 teaming with AWS
LOL @Mike, you'd have to have that go into the cloud, as you're likely to go through several device upgrades before then. I'm serious, though, we always see the predictions in headlines but never the comparison to real life. That's not limited to tech. This year, there were numerous headlines like this: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/cherry-blossom-peak-bloom-prediction-will-be-announced-wednesday/2017/02/28/2a2e6ce8-fdda-11e6-8ebe-6e0dbe4f2bca_story.html?utm_term=.31ace311c23a But there were no headlines about the actual blossom time, which only occurred on March 25, which is pretty normal.

I'm sure enterprises will get on board someday with PAYG pricing schemes. But I'm fascinated by how the PAYG model is generally a "discount brand" model -- and how PAYG can shift toward more "upscale" customers as it matures.

@mhhfive:

I hear you. At present PAYG model is more of a discounted model and may not be a prefreed option for upscale customers. We never know PAYG may soon come up with an upscale PAYG versions that may be more handy to that category of customers.

Perhaps more and more, people will see PAYG as a "Netflix model" instead of a discount model. So it's more of a pay for a service than a "way to cut the cord" business.

Hopefully that perception will develop and PAYG will become more like a pay for service model.

Amazon Chime
I had never heard of Chime before today, I must have missed class that week. It is interesting how many pots Amazon has its hands in and how they somehow manage to succeed at everything they do.

Partnership
It is great that Level 3 is partnering with Amazon. This will help increase the customer base for Level 3 and help Amazon capture new customers. I would like to see more partnerships versus M&A's. I think partnerships are better for customers and for each company.

I have long thought Amazon should offer enterprises more services like email. UC is another great option, given the powerful cloud infrastructure Amazon offers. But leveraging Level 3's customer facing strategies, this could be the beginning of a fruitful partnership.

Re: Partnership
@afwriter I think the problem is that it cannot monetize email the way Google has. Amazon isn't really a leader in ads and user data. This is probably why they've never offered the service before: They know they can't compete.

Re: Partnership
@dcawrey Good point. My impression of Amazon is that they tend to leverage technology they build for their own infrastructure to monetize by offering it to other companies to use. Google, on the other hand, focuses on creating products & services with the end customer in mind, with the intention of monetizing it by selling the ability to access the user demographic info they're aggregating to other businesses. The amount of power/control those two companies have combined is kind of scary to think about! So many companies & individuals rely on their services.
