WHY A POST CODE SYSTEM AND NOT JUST USE GEOCODE LAT & LONG?

NO GOOGLE EARTH TO GO BY?

Steel

Have a great weekend!

Steel

Good day to all - until next time

Platinum

Thnak you all - I hope it gave you an insight into what is a huge success story!

Jim - TCI is stunningly beautiful - make sure you visit Danny Buoys!

OTT on a 49" flatscreen-10 hr/week; then 3 hr/week streeming on a 23" desktop.

Steel

And who mentioned coffee and donuts.....I see both in my near future!!

Cant wait for my holiday o TCI next month!

Steel

Thanks, John, for staying to chat!

Platinum

Thanks John and Adi. Good stuff.

Author
@michelle & @kelsey That's why I avoid social media until I've been able to watch the most recent episode of GOT! :)
Platinum

OK, folks - we're out of time. Please join me in thanking John for joining us today, and thanks to you all for listening in and for all your great questions and comments.

Author

Adi - weather is fun - it's a fact if life here. We do extremely careful planning during hurricane season and have full busienss continuity plans in place - we are in Hurricane season currently and have almost weekly call on the subject to ensure we are always ready

Great point Joe - to me there is a degree of both competition and complement between OTT and traditional - the problem OTT guys will have is that they are in an increasingly crowded market and it's hard to stay relevant. Some will win , some will not - not everyone with a NEtflix account is a cord cutter - there is a big 2nd TV market too

John - another good question, specially given storms and hurricanes in your region. What is the impact of weather on outside plant?

Author

My watching habits are definately 85% on demnd

@msilbey: How loosely are you defining Millennial?

For me, I adhere to separate definitions/distinctions for Gen-X and Gen-Y respectively, at the very least (and wonder if we should go back to the short-lived Gen-Z).  I consider myself a later Gen-Xer...but, as others do, if you *were* to include me and people sharing my birth year -- the fact that I would be subjectively offended aside ;) -- I'd tell you that I do almost all of my viewing on a regular old TV.

This wasn't always the case. I spent a few years with a cut cord and no TV. Now I consume regular cable and OTT/Internet video alike on a standard flatscreen in the living room.

Second most amount of video I consume (intentionally) = on desktops/laptops. I try to consume as little video on mobile as reasonably feasible because I don't like holding up a device (or craning my neck) to stare at a small screen.

So basically the inverse of our audience.

Author

Michelle - I tihnk social media takes care of all spoilers by default!! :)

Incidentally, most of our audience put their VoD viewing at about 80% or higher. According to Nielsen it is...

27 hours & 8 minutes per week of Live TV viewing by average US TV viewer. That's out of an approximate total of about 33-34 hours of video consumed per week, making it close to 80% of all video consumption.

Author

Adi - for nDVR we use very smary disk arrays and logic - we only store one copy of all content etc and we store multile formats to avoid masses of need for on the fly transcoding

Good question @Kelsey -- I wonder too. How can they avoid spoilers in the hyper-connected world?

Platinum

Kelsey - we allow people to go back in time (within what is allowed by our ocntent agreemnts) a day and watch live TV from yesterday - we can extend this for weeks, if content agreements would allow

Question for John: How big of a burden on bandwidth and storage is your network DVR service? How did you scale up for that?

Author

FTTH is highly efficent in terms of power - in fact Verizon built a lot of the FIOS business case on opex savings over copper

Are more viewers willing to DVR sports, for example, versus watching live broadcasts than say 5 years ago?

Author

@John thanks for addressing the electricity issue.

Platinum

@ adi - content is still king - you can have the best platform in the world but witohut relevant content, you're going nowhere

If FTTH requires less power distribution, does that mean it is more energy-efficient as well?
Platinum

Another question for John -- How do you monitor video quality, or is it based on subscriber complaint calls?

Author

Electricity - great point. It is generlly improving in the Caribbean and we back up everything. Another reaosn we selected to go all optical for the FTTH network - it generally requires less power distribution!

I agree. Thank you, John. And thanks to Adi and the rest of the TT team.

The MIT India Conference, incidentally, is where I conducted two great interviews for Telco Transformation on video:

Karl Mehta Q&A (on AR/VR in education): http://www.telcotransformation.com/author.asp?section_id=401&doc_id=732201

Sudhanshu Vats Q&A (Group CEO of India's Viacom16), Part 1 -- discussion focused on OTT and mobile: http://www.telcotransformation.com/author.asp?section_id=401&doc_id=732133

Sudhanshu Vats Q&A, Part 2 -- discussion focused on AR/VR, video AI, and other analytics considerations with video broadcasting/programming: http://www.telcotransformation.com/author.asp?section_id=401&doc_id=732376

Interesting question for John: Does choice of platform/flexibility have as much of an impact as flexibility of content/subscriptions?

Author

Great show, thanks John and Adi :)

Platinum
This was great - thank you, Adi & John!
Platinum

@Joe That's a very long walk. I've read a little about emerging markets and existing electricity availability. Subscriber models must also account for spotty access.

Platinum

Thanks @John and @Adi!

Author
@Joe San Diego. (It was unusually unpleasant weather - my poor SoCal iPhone couldn't adjust to the uncharacteristic climate) :-P
Platinum

Can you tell us about your VR application with Huawei that's running in a lab?

Author

@Michelle: Absolutely. This was one of the major themes of the MIT India Conference in April. Without mobile-pay wallets and similar technology, people in some of the more rural parts of India literally have to walk 19 or 20 miles each way if they need to get cash.

Video development/innovation is fascinating in the developing and semi-developed markets because you have much more of a mix of real legacy stuff (including CRT TVs w/ antennae) and the latest and greatest.

Creative payment structures are very important

Platinum

Curious for any millennials actually listening right now- do you subscribe to a traditional, old-style cable TV service? How much do you watch TV on a big-screen TV versus a mobile device?

Gold

@Joe - Ah yes, I'm originally from the Philadelphia suburbs and the humidity there is just stifling in the summer.

Platinum

Every 6 months?? It's amazing you can keep up with change like this.

Platinum

How do you monitor video quality? Golden eye a thing of the past?

Author

@faryl: Remind me...You're in TX?

To speak to Adi's point re: mobile-first generations, so many of those studies are a few years old now. I'm curious to see updated data -- and to see precisely the level to which that has continued.

@Joe Just regular use. It was a hot/humid streak out here. It was a couple of models ago (I think the 4 or 5)
Platinum

@faryl: Wouldn't surprise me terribly.

News today, incidentally: He's officially the richest man in the world now.

@vnewman: I actually don't mind the humidity in FL so much because I like the heavy air pressure. And it gets CRAZY humid here in Boston/New England in the summer, anyway.

lol @Joe!

What if there's a problem? Robots fix the servers? No more on-call for techs. This just might work!!!!

Platinum
@Joe I bet Bezos is on that idea!
Platinum

@faryl: Wow. Did you leave it in a car or something, or was it normal use/storage?

Got it.  Ugh and the humidity in Florida too!  Not a server-friendly place!

Platinum
@joe My iPhone fried when it got too hot/humid here.
Platinum

I would say yes- you are right

Platinum

Crazy idea: What if we put our datacenters in space as satellites? (Nobody steal my idea, pls.) Then you don't have to worry about the environmental impact of these datacenters so much.

But, then, how do you get water there...?

Ah, well. The idea's probably as dumb as it sounds. For now, anyway.

...of course, considering those reports from several years ago about iPhones screwing up and breaking/"freezing" at extreme sub-freezing temperatures in Finland, I tend to wonder about the heating costs/climate control issues going the other way at the other extreme.

What about full duplex DOCSIS and the move to IP?

Author
Too bad so many places are stuck with older infrastructure- limits bandwidth options, etc.
Platinum

@vnewman: That is indeed it. Air conditioning, air conditioning, air conditioning. Gotta keep those servers cool! And that's a lot harder in South Florida than it is in, say, Maine.

(Had a great conversation w/ a GSMA guy a year ago on this subject. I kinda wish I had my notes handy from that.)

@Joe - going back to your comment about datacenters and energy - it is just the cost of regulating the temperature that is the biggest factor?  If not, what is it?

Platinum

On standards, this is very relevant to the discussion right now (and usually relevant to discussions of standards, anyway): https://xkcd.com/927/

On the topic of PaaS and what that means... I gotta say, for all of my problems with NIST, I really appreciate one aspect of their Cloud Roadmap from a few years ago -- expressly stating that there were really only three types of cloud services: SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS. Everything else/all the other flavors, it continued, are really just variations on one of those three.

And that is, indeed, the best way to think of it, in general, I believe.

@Joe we got Cookie Crunch once or twice. It was...interesting, but not fantastic. You missed very little

Platinum
@Michelle I still love Rice Krispies. I'm a sucker for the snap, crackle & pop
Platinum

Total Raisin Bran is good! (Or maybe I've always been "old".)

@Michelle: I liked Rice Krisipies, FWIW.

You know, this has got me thinking... I don't think I've ever had Cookie Crunch in my life. I used to daydream about that cereal when I saw the commercials.

Does choice of platform/flexibility have as much of an impact as flexibility of content/subscriptions?
Platinum

...and Raisin Bran (ick)

Platinum

@Faryl: Makes sense. Grandmother time was the best time to get away with stuff. I usually took advantage to watch shows I wasn't allowed to watch at home.

How big of an impact does live sports have across various devices? While I'm at it, USA 2, Jamaica 1. :)

Author

@Joe We got plain Cheerios & Rice Crispies. Honey Nut Cheerios were what other people ate...

Platinum

lol, I was typing that exactly as he was saying it.

Yeah, the kids these days want what they want when they want it on the tools they already have.

Agreed. We the people like choice...

Platinum
@joe Cocoa Puffs were limited to grandma's house. We too were a Honey Nut Cheerios household.
Platinum

@Mike: I just had an interview with an industry exec the other day who spoke at length about how weather and climate play a HUGE role on energy considerations, which themselves play a huge role in IT architecture/infrastructure decisions. Seems like the best places to have your datacenter are places like Alaska, Canada, Siberia, Greenland, etc.

@Joe Oooh! I love Intervention. I haven't watched in ages though. Loving the new season of GOT!
Platinum

@Faryl: I wasn't allowed to eat Cocoa Puffs as a child. I've only ever had them as an adult a few times, and even then only in the "cereal bar" context instead of regular Cocoa Puffs in a bowl with milk.

About as unhealthy as we got in my house for cereal was Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Once we got Golden Grahams but that was too sugary for my tastes. We usually had Honey Nut Cheerios. (I was also a Crispy Wheats & Raisins fan.)

@Faryl: ...although I am SUPER excited about the new Intervention premiere a week from today!

@Joe You're right, they were fantastic!! You were lucky to have watched them at the time. Saturday programming is very meh these days.

Platinum

@faryl: To answer your question, almost all of it. Except *sometimes* when I take brief meal breaks (<15 minutes) to see what's on if I'm working from home, to see what's on, about the only time I reliably watch regular ol' live TV = (1) new GoT episodes, (2) SOMETIMES new South Park episodes.

@joe Saturday morning cartoons go great w/a bowl of Cocoa Puffs
Platinum

Whoa! Sounds difficult. I assume you made maps too. Crazy!!

Platinum
Smart move making everything cloud-based. Sounds like the up front time investment was crucial towards ensuring future growth opportunities
Platinum

Wow buildings without addresses?

Author

How big of a burden on bandwidth and storage is your network DVR service? How did you scale up for that?

Gold

@faryl/@Michelle: Reminds me of a 4th-grade assignment on bar graphs where we had to make a bar graph indicating how many hours of TV we watched each week. I had to tape a second sheet of paper to mine to indicate my Saturday hours. My teacher wrote on the paper, "Joseph, I'm shocked!"

Whatever. Saturday Morning Cartoons were awesome.

@Joe Hi there! What percentage of *your* video watching is VOD?
Platinum

@Kelsey: Are you watching the new one too?

What is the impact of weather on outside plant?

Author

Lot's of work building infrastructure

Platinum

Phew, sounds like a huge range of challenges

Author

Hi, guys! (Got here a few minutes late. Time got away from me.)

@faryl ha! lots of donuts consumed on that show for sure

Author
@Kelsey I've been watching that too! It makes me crave coffee & donuts.
Platinum

@Kelsey it's more difficult to choose when the options are so many. You choose watch time and lineup... hard work :D

Platinum

@John you mentioned making viewing interactive, can you expand on that?

Author

All is working now. Thanks!

Steel
I wish we had fiber here
Platinum

@Michelle & @faryl it's a challenge with so much great on-demand content! Was watching the original Twin Peaks on Netflix last night.

Author

Trying pressing F5 to refresh your screen if the show hasn't started streaming yet or you are having trouble with the sound.

If you are still having trouble with the sound, try a different browser.

Author

haha @Kelsey -- your answer could have been "too much". nobody would know the real tally :D

Platinum
@kelsey I wasn't sure how "honest" to be if it were total video hours. I definitely watch too much! :)
Platinum

Jamaica...I'm jealous!

Author

I'd say 90% on-demand too IF you're counting DVR content in that content. Very little live viewing.

Gold

@LA This is an audio-only presentation. There are no auto-advancing slides.

Platinum

@laronowitz there aren't slides on radio shows

Author

I was worried you were going to ask how much video I watch a day, by hours, which sometimes is probably too much ;) Reading is fundamental, right?

Author
100% on demand
Platinum

Slides are not advancing

Steel

Poll answer: 90% probably

broadcast tv is rarely seen @home

Platinum

Pro tip: Use Firefox instead of Chrome or Safari (probably MS Edge)

Platinum
Meeting an Olympic champion is a pretty rare event! Has anyone met any Olympic medalists? I met someone once who has a gymnastics maneuver named after her....
Platinum

Good afternoon everyone!  Remember to turn up your volume on the computers.  At the top of the hour an audio player will pop up on your screen.  If you don't see it, try to press F5 to refresh your screen. Remember, there's no slides for this it's just a discussion, so be sure to post your questions, comments and thoughts on the message boards and we will join you on the chat after the audio stream.

Author

@Mike everything is on topic until the topic changes (in 2 minutes) :D

Platinum

Totally off topic, but have you met Usain Bolt, and if so, what was he like?

Author

@John I don't think that counts...

Are you based in Jamaica or just flaunting your vacation :)

(while also working on vacation)

:|

Platinum

Michelle - two giant M&Ms just walked past my office.....normal day in Jamaica!!

22 minutes until show time. Who has snack duty today?

Platinum

Looking forward to this.

Steel

Ha, ha - John, that's just my way of wrangling an invitation to Digicel HQ!

Author

Folks - if there is anything in particular you would like me to touch on during the interview - please let me know and I will try to work it in. I will also be here for any Q&A afterwards - Mike Transcoding will be covered!

It will be interesting to hear how transcoding will evolve to keep up with ever increasing amounts of video.

Author

"The Beach" Adi - I need to get you over to downtown Kingston - you find a beach, I'll eat my laptop! Talk to you all shortly - JQ

Looking forward to this radio show, sounds like John is a great speaker!

Author

Yes, running an operation by the beach sounds pretty good, but I suspect there are some challenges involved.

Author
Looking forward to this! (The Carribean island part doesn't sound too bad!)
Platinum

Looking forward to answering any questions you folks have after the show.

Thanks for the links @Adi! Very helpful

Platinum

As I hope I can "drop by", any entity that does not have Video as part of their strategy (in some fashion or another) does so at their peril.

Platinum

Here's a couple of posts on Digicel, and John's journey over the past few years:

Digicel's Quinn: From Zero to 100K in Three Years

Digicel's Quinn: Video is Always Relevant

Author

I have to admit I didn't read the full description before... 80% of traffic will be video!?? That's insane.

Platinum

Digicel is making great strides in technology. It shows how companies can grow and move from being a niche company to a mult-serivce provider company.

Platinum

Hi John! Nice to see you visiting the room a little early. See you again soon :)

Platinum

Hi folks - really looking forward to this one. We have completely changed advanced communications and entertainment and created Gigabit societies here in the Caribbean so looking forward to sharing what we have learned and what tredns we are seeing!

Busy room full of early birds! I'm looking forward to the show :)

Platinum

Sounds interesting.  Looking forward to it.

Platinum

That was the easiest registration I've ever experienced!

Author

Hope to attend should be interesting show and chat after

Platinum
Looking forward to it
Steel

Sounds like this will be an interesting chat!
