Re: You Down With IoT?
@dcawrey: Honestly, I can't speak to this very well because I haven't seen much for modern film stage-musical adaptations. Didn't see Rent. Haven't seen the Les Mis film. Oh, well. What are your thoughts there?

In any case, having seen a lot of film adaptations of musicals from the more "golden" era, it seems to me that most of these film adaptations are good but don't do much (if anything) to properly and fully leverage the medium of film to heighten the story in a way that simply can't be done on stage.

A notable exception to this, kind of, IMHO: The 1962 film adaptation of The Music Man.

(The 1963 film adaptation of How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying also did a pretty good job with this too -- but they changed and cut a lot of stuff, to my chagrin.)

But if you watch, say, the film adaptation of Oklahoma!, it's pretty much just a poor-man's film substitute for seeing it on stage. Ditto for, say, Guys and Dolls, IMHO.

Re: You Down With IoT?
@Joe Stanganelli You know what, I haven't seen Chicago. Thanks for the tip.

It does make me think of Rent and how that was done in a more complex style. However, don't they do this with all musicals?

Re: You Down With IoT?
@dcawrey: There are good examples of movie adaptations of plays that do work -- using the medium of film to heighten rather than merely translate the action.

A great example of this, in my mind, is the film adaptation of Chicago.

I also have found that the film adaptations of other Mamet plays, beyond Glengarry Glen Ross, are generally quite well done; American Buffalo (of which Mamet directed the film adaptation himself) particularly comes to mind.

Re: You Down With IoT?
I've seen the movie, but I think seeing the play live action is much better.

This is something I have noticed about turning plays into movies. It's tough to make the transition. Take Fences for example. It's a good movie but misses a lot of action-type scenes because it is adapted from a play.

Re: You Down With IoT?
@Joe Stanganelli  I was lucky to have even seen it on Broadway since it showed for less than a year. I recall my sister insisting I go see it with her and my brother-in-law. It was a small theatre, and we ran into Sally Struthers at the ticket booth. We said hello, but she was snobby.

Re: You Down With IoT?
@srufolo: Yeah, stuff got added and taken out for the movie. I was particularly peeved that they cut the ending. (For those who have only seen the movie -- in the play, there is a little bit extra that occurs with Roma and Williamson that takes place after where the movie ends). And showing Levine's phone calls was just unnecessary, IMHO.

I too saw the play first -- albeit a relatively mediocre amateur production thereof instead of on Broadway. Still, it was good, and enjoyable.

Re: You Down With IoT?
@Joe Stanganelli I saw the play first. I can barely remember the play now it was so long ago. I think Joe Mantegna was in it. When the movie came out, I watched but never the entire thing because it didn't compare with the play. I like the line though: "Coffee is for closers." A good one.
