Standardization and coordination to prevent lock-in
Davis is right that not many people saw it coming, but now it's essential: clouds with coordinated standards can't lock clients in, so that becomes an essential selling point for them.  It's sort of a virtuous circle of disarmament; the vendor that provides the least required proprietary stuff becomes the most attractive one to stay with, and the best way to compete in that arena is to be the most open out of all the competitors.

Re: Standardization and coordination to prevent lock-in
@JohnBarnes  The Oracle 30-year contract seems a bit excessive. Works out well for Oracle's bottom line, but not so much for the clients' needs maybe. I don't think any company would want to be locked into one vendor for that long. Moving to the cloud should be open-source, and, as you pointed out, not locked into proprietary stuff.

The only 30 year contract I would ever sign is for a house and even then I would rather not if I had the option.

@afwriter  Ha ha. Good point. With a mortgage you're stuck with the same bank. No you're not. Your mortgage will get sold to a million different "servicers" along the way. In any event, it's a long haul!

Re: Standardization and coordination to prevent lock-in
I think the whole world of technology was different back in the 90s though than it is today. And good gravy do I feel old thinking about how 30 year contracts signed in the 90s are coming to a close. Maybe it was just my age in the 90s, but it didn't seem like technology was as ever-evolving back then like it is now. Obviously it did evolve, but today it seems like you literally just can't keep up. It isn't possible. The minute you buy a Samsung Galaxy S7 they're rolling out the 8 and your phone is "dated." The we settled into 4G and talk of 5G was on its way. It doesn't make sense to agree to something like a 30 year contract for anything technology related today. But in the 90s, settling in with Oracle was just something a lot of businesses did.

Re: Standardization and coordination to prevent lock-in
Vendors may not be gettting the 30 years contracts, but they are digging in their heels on working with open source. they offer a lower price if a carrier buys the whole package instead of just one piece. Carriers want the one piece (VNFs) to work across different networks and vendors.

Public Cloud
I agree with Davis on public cloud for certain industries such as financial services and healthcare. They are too many risks involved with moving to a public cloud and too many additional security measures that must be in place for it to work. I know they eventually these industries will move to a public cloud but I hope it will be a long time from now.

Read the book "Dragnet Nation" to learn about how lax privacy measures are and how much consumer information is so easily accessible. Even if you are not concerned it is great to be aware.

Re: Standardization and coordination to prevent lock-in
@srufolo1, I agree. But I think companies are smarter now and don't get locked into long-term contracts like that anyone. I worked in Asset management and contracting. It is amazing how much money companies spend on SW&HW and maintenance costs. At one company I worked when I performed asset management and tracked all of the contracts in a database, there were at least 10 companies that will billing us for services we no longer used. There were at least another 5 that were double-billing us. They were other companies where our maintenance has expired and we were being charged a higher price.

@clrmoney. It is great that many companies are moving towards offering cloud servcies and SW-WAN. This helps level the playing field for competitors and helps drive down the prices for residential and commercial customers.
