Re: "necessary" vs. "video service"
I remember considering Magic Jack at one point years ago, but deciding against it or some compelling reason or other that I can no longer remember.

In any case, yep, traditional landlines cost money -- but if you don't mind having a more limited plan, they can be very affordable. And even if you want something very flexible, they're on par with pricing for cell plans.

Re: "necessary" vs. "video service"
I always thought Magic Jack was the cheapest solution?

That being said, it sure is ridiculous how much people have to pay for a landline. While I consider it non-essential, its one of the reasons cable providers started doing triple play deals for internet, cable and phone for a low price.

Re: "necessary" vs. "video service"
@mhh: One of my friends on LinkedIn has had a popular discussion going this week on this profile as he looks for a cheaper option for a landline. Circumstances make continuing to have a landline option highly preferred, but he and his family are looking to save money.

A lot of suggestions for VOIP services like Vonage, a lot of suggestions for Ooma (which I am largely unfamiliar with; can someone here shed some light?); a lot of suggestions for "artificial" numbers via services like Google Voice and Skype.

Re: "necessary" vs. "video service"
@Mike: There have been some articles this year in industry pubs like Variety and Hollywood Reporter on the tremendous clout that Netflix is wielding, completely disrupting the industry as well as the social levels on which it operates. Top studio execs can't get their phone calls returned anymore like they used to.

There is an interesting parallel between west coast and east coast here. There was a piece in Politico today about how the socialites of "Old Washington" are having the same difficulty in the Trump Administration.

Re: Video Necessary
@freehe: Certainly, although I think that it is reasonable to consider network carriers and service providers "different" in this regard the lines increasingly blur between those who operate networks and deliver data and those who create the consumable data that travel on those networks.

Comcast comes to mind -- i.e., its acquisition of NBC Universal...

Video Necessary
Some companies use video and it doesn't generate in sales. Companies have to weight the pros and cons of using video and develop a strategic plan for why they want to use video and what they hope to accomplish by using it.

Re: "necessary" vs. "video service"
I am curious to see which one they are--certainly anyone who has a media outreach strategy has to have video--right?

Re: "necessary" vs. "video service"
I don't think all service providers need to use video because not all of their customers watch video. There are several successful companies that have never used video.
