Re: AI + VR: Productive video impact
It will also keep the person's attention and probably make the person more motivated to do a good job rather than being bored the entire time.

Re: AI + VR: Productive video impact
@afwriter - This has been one of my biggest hopes for the progression of AI/VR is to completely transform training. At this point just about every training I've ever been in has been completely boring. I think just about every company could in some way benefit from some kind of AI/VR training.

Re: VR and AR
freehe - Great question, and we should have explained it before. VR or virtual reality is an immersive experience, where you have no ability to view the "real" world. Typically you would have a headset, and you can only see the virtual world that the game or other experience takes you into. VR gaming is a good example of this.

AR, or augmented reality just adds animated or other digital elements into the real world around you. The most widely used example would be Pokemon Go, where digital characters show up on your phone screen as you look through your camera phone at the world around you.

There are variations -- for example, the "magic window" which is a player on your phone or PC that allows you to move your field of view 360 degrees, but is like a photo or video in all other respects.

Increasingly people are talking about mixed reality, which is another variation of AR, bringing real world elements into a virtual world.

It's also a question of who you ask now -- every start-up is trying to differentiate what it does...

VR and AR
It would be great if the article discussed briefly the difference between VR and AR. I am not a gamer so I don't know the difference.

Re: AI and VR and Gaming
@clrmoney. I agree. Gaming and VR can be used together to enhance the gaming experience for viewers. AI provides the option of VR and can help solve existing problems across the country.

Re: AI + VR: Productive video impact
DCawrey,

Oh, yeah -- big data, machine learning, and predictive analytics are all over the R&D end of the gaming world right now. Most of it hasn't made it to deployment -- those darn people can only play games so fast and for so much time per day, so it's taking time to gather enough data to finish the work -- but that's clearly where things are going.

A genuine concern among data scientists who work in the gaming industry is how to deal with NPC*s becoming better at games than people. They can already beat the best humans in abstract, closed systems like chess and go, and it's not because the programmers play better than the masters; indeed, the masters are often unable to follow how the software is beating them, but can sense strongly that there are rationales behind it (which is close enough to the program's having intuition that I say there's no difference).  Eventually -- and sooner than anyone may want to admit it -- there will be software that runs characters who have more empathy, understanding, and cunning about people than the best human players in adventure games.

It may spoil the fun of games (though I really don't think it will!), but imagine having a teacher who takes you places, lets you try things hands on, and coaches with more patience, understanding, sensitivity, and wisdom/intuition than you are ever likely to see from a human being.

Many things flower as they become obsolete ... human beings may be the ultimate one.

*Gaming term, nonplayer characters, i.e. bots that run characters so that you don't have to have a human in every role to have humans play. Definition provided for the insufficiently nerdly.

Re: AI + VR: Productive video impact
Surprisingly, I had not thought much about the impact of AI on gaming. But it certainly is going to be huge. I was reading somewhere that developers are using AI to gather data and thus make AI "smarter". That makes a lot of sense if you ask me.

At least it will make training more interesting, right?

Re: AI + VR: Productive video impact
@JohnBarnes, as always, very insightful comments.  I think gaming is an excellent learning and training tool.  The "discovery" through channels that people and young people are accepting of provide a great learning environment.  We can all learn from that!

I believe that learning (with technology) will evolve into entirely different formats.  I do not believe we won't recognize the new systems twenty years from now!

Re: AI + VR: Productive video impact
Adi,

Great point. Training is getting more gamified all the time anyway, so there' s a natural overlap, and one of the frontiers in gaming is creating new environments and problems for the players on the fly (i.e. things that weren't scripted), which is precisely analogous -- maybe identical -- to the problem of training people for unprecedented situations.  Another place where "a machine can only do what you tell it" from the 20th century is rapidly becoming obsolete in favor of the 21st century upgrade: "software will try to find out what you want, whether you understand it yourself or not, and then become the software that can deliver it, so WANT CAREFULLY."

(Insert obligatory Forbidden Planet reference here!)
