Re: medical security and liability?
Yes it's sad just because it's modern doesn't always mean it's safe or more secure.

Re: Open source is much more acceptable now...
That's how open source is supposed to work in theory, but we've seen how Heartbleed and other bugs have persisted -- and how open source hasn't quite gotten the same level of support as proprietary systems.

mhhf1ve,

Well, that's supposed to be one of the strengths of open source -- that as critical needs emerge and deepen, market forces pour more and better effort into them. So if open source is what it's cracked up to be, there should be a bunch of excellent open source reliability and security tools coming along real soon.

Open source is much more acceptable now...
I think Open Source has gained mainstream acceptance as "not scary" -- but perhaps it hasn't overcome its reputation for being "difficult and messy" and potentially more expensive to maintain. Any open source project has to address those fears now, and I suspect someone will crack the nut of making open source less messy and unreliable someday....

medical security and liability?
> " In healthcare, they're all worried about making sure that the security is second to none because of the liabilities they have if the patient information gets disclosed somehow through a hole in their IoT strategy they did with open source code. "

Hmm. And yet many hospitals have been paying ransomware fees. So there's some disconnect with paying "anything" to be secure and actually being secure.... otherwise, hospitals would have paid to upgrade their systems to more modern OSes..?

I suppose more modern doesn't necessarily mean more secure, either, though...

Lane Open Standards
The Open Standard can be something diffrent and exciting to offer for them when we are talking about staying advanced on things like AI etc. So they should give it a try to see the outcome.
