Re: Akamai Takes Aim at Your Device
@Adi Yes, and in the case of the company (still can't remember which company it was) that was gathering the information on the children, I think it was unaware of the law, or that it was doing anything considered to be illegal.

How does the licensing work..?
I wonder how Akamai's caching works with respect to licensing the content -- I could imagine that content owners like paying consumers to get their content faster, but they wouldn't necessarily like all their content cached in places where it might not be used or paid for.

It could be a possible security risk...?

Re: Akamai Takes Aim at Your Device
srufolo1  - Ah, I see. I think most large companies are quite careful about managing these issues, at least in terms of complying with existing laws. But lines still aren't clearly drawn in this area, and there probably will be attempts to push boundaries by some companies in the digital media space.

Re: Akamai Takes Aim at Your Device
@Adi That makes sense. I got the impression they may be illicitly tapping into people's personal accounts the way that company (forget who it was now) was "spying" on children's viewing habits.

Re: More Advanced Devices
For the most part, mobile media works really well. But content delivery systems can really help smooth out those rough parts I think most people don't even notice.

Streaming mobile content is harder to deliver than some people think!

Re: Akamai Takes Aim at Your Device
srufalo1- Akamai gathers a lot of information at it's caching nodes, so when a stream is requested, Akamai knows from where (geographically) and from what IP address, on which operators network etc. And with this pre-loading app, they must be also collecting information at the device level -- so what is the end-user watching, at what times etc. So between the caching node and the viewing device, they probably pick up quite a lot.

Akamai Takes Aim at Your Device
There clearly is the need to make content delivery faster on mobile devices and Akamai sounds like it's truly working on a few viable solutions, but how does Akamai track its users' viewing habits? That had me stumped.
