Ages
I know a lot of prime time shows aim to appeal to an 18-49 demographic. (Though that's an extremely large demographic made up of so many different kinds of viewers, in so many different stages of life, it's a little ridiculous.) Nonetheless, advertisers like that demographic. As for Pay-TV I think they just need to focus on all consumers. Everyone pays them money, so why would you turn it down? Or not make things usable for them? Make the interfaces friendly (not all millenials are computer savvy) the content varied and the customers will roll in an appreciate it.

Pay TV Target Audience
Hulu, Netfix and Amazon don't focus on a specific audience. They have content for all ages and demographics which is how companies should operate. When companies focus on one age group they are limiting their revenue potential.

Pay TV Audience
They didn't really have an option for my choice but I say no one company should focus on one age group. Large companies that have been in business for years have customers than span age ranges. Unless a company specifically targets a particular age group such as elderly or millennials pay TV companies should not focus on only one group. They can create targeted advertising for elderly and millennials but also need pay TV for all groups in between.

Content is King (again!)
Maybe don't focus on age brackets at all? I think the best strategy is to focus on making products that appeal to everyone. The iPad is simply a great design that anyone can use, so I doubt Apple tried to make it appeal to young kids OR older adults -- they just made a product that was easy to use.

Netflix similarly doesn't try to target a particular demographic exclusively. They make an easy to use interface and then try to get content that appeals to all ages....
