Facebook's Schmidtke on TIP & the New Connectivity Paradigm
This a good point but i think it may be not fully there with the devlopement and the program softwares. But i think it can be with the softwares and the spec with the technology.

Re: Facebook Best Practices
Good point! I haven't thought about that yet. True, Facebook is super successful right now, but there are negative sides of Facebook, as you pointed out.

Also more of a problem than it looks like
Nonconnectivity does worse things than create pockets of communication-deprived people; it also creates places where what goes on in the local net (and there's almost always a local net) is masked from the wider world, and there are many good reasons (home base for malware and for security penetration being just two of them) that you don't want that. Bruce Sterling's 1988 novel Islands in the Net is sympathetic to the position of the "islands", but does a great job of outlining why a reasonably peaceful and prosperous international economic order won't be able to tolerate them. Better to dissolve them quietly and peacefully with their cooperation!

What Sterling missed, though, is what Schmidtke is dealing with constantly: the islands are not necessarily obvious or out in plain sight.  Most of the islands are not Ugandas, wholly unnetworked areas; they are alternately-networked areas scattered through the whole system.

And another application of Big Data
That process of identifying the pockets of non-connectivity so they can be brought into the system is a surprisingly difficult and complicated one, and an immense big data problem that Facebook thankfully has both the resources and the need for (since it leads to their effectively doing the research for everyone). It's like a version of the Traveling Salesman Problem but much less constrained -- as if N is very large and you're allowed to add cities and build roads if it pays enough. I'd be curious how their algorithmists are tackling that one -- there must be some pretty far-out frontierish stuff going on.

In this industry if you are not one step ahead you are two steps behind and Facebook has proven to always be one step ahead so far.

Re: Facebook TIP
@clrmoney, I agree. This will be useful for Facebook all other social media companies if they implement it. It is great that startups will be able to collaborate with operators, system integrators, infrastructure providers and other technology companies because in some instances startups have a hard time trying to collaborate with companies and share knowledge.

It is great for the industry that they are moving from the traditional model to a much better model to increase productivity and speed up R&D.

Facebook Best Practices
It is great to hear that Facebook "focuses on sharing and developing best practices in culture and process transformation to improve operators' key metrics."

I am curious when sharing and developing best practices will translate into the daily operations of the Facebook website preventing cyberbullying, identifying harmful keywords, stopping live videos of brutal attacks and deaths,

Re: Facebook's Schmidtke on TIP
This really makes me think a lot about how different Facebook will be in 10 years. They've invested heavily in VR - and we all know how different the platform already is from its early days. I would expect a lot more change to come, that's for sure.

Facebook's Schmidtke on TIP
Facebook's TIP Project is all about a connected world, and it's smart of Facebook to form alliances to get this done. I've always seen Facebook and its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, as extremely visionary and innovative. It has come such a long way.
