Re: Live streaming havng the right technology
Live streaming is already being used for broadcast events. Think about the NFL on Twitter or the Super Bowl. Sure, not everyone is watching online yet, but I think it's only a matter of time.

Re: Live streaming havng the right technology
I really is only a matter of time -- so that the tech can catch up. Maybe when 5G is fully deployed (along with the underlying infrastructure improvements)?

It's not like live streaming requires two-way live streaming? That'll be next, though, I'm sure.

Re: Live streaming havng the right technology
mhhf1ve,

The real demand is probably for catch-up-able live streaming, being able to have both a "wht's happening now" screen and a "highlights from earlier" screen.  The latter can be chunked and selected and doesn't have to be super-fast, so the window for the former can be really, really narrow (maybe just a few seconds, maybe even "true live.") At an offhand guess some such arrangement will probably mean that there's just never much of a bandwidth problem, especially since "live" is less of a selling point to younger viewers.

Re: Live streaming havng the right technology
Yeah, the dream of constant live video conferencing is probably something no one really wants. It's just too taxing to be "on" for a live performance and attentive all the time.

Re: Live streaming havng the right technology
Well, even in the real world we all learn ways to be there/not there with our eyes open and appearing to be engrossed while actually thinking about anything else in the universe. If live teleconferencing really does become the main way of doing business, it will probably evolve a similar set of defense mechanisms.

Re: Live streaming havng the right technology
If you remember the Jetsons cartoon, they thought of some of these problems with live video calls... and solved it with "masks" that a caller could put on so the other end saw a perfectly coifed version of you. I assume with cgi augmented reality, we'll have real time digital avatars that hide our true physical selves....

I know exactly which episode you are talking about! I could see that leading to all kinds of problems in the future we already have it with catfishing, Snapchat filters, and people using 10-year-old photos as profiles.

A good friend of mine had a whole set of his online photos stolen -- and used as a dating profile on Match.com. Imagine his surprise when one of his wife's friends recognized him and told his wife about it. He had some explaining to do, but it was obviously a fake profile.

@JohnBarnes - I think some people already work to make themselves "business" on top and relaxed on bottom for skype calls. I know I did in an interview for a teaching job once in pajama pants, that were neatly concealed under my desk. :-) Ever since I always wonder if someone else is doing the same.

Elizabeth V,

Business at ground level, party in the basement has been around for at least forty years -- I suppose it probably has been ever since motion picture cameras.

(The 4-second clip is safe for work but because it's a clip from a pretty raunchy movie, I'd be careful to hit the stop button rather than let YouTube roll you into anything after ...)

The Jetsons had the right idea. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EwOcT3sK8Eg Maybe augmented reality will be good enough to get beyond the dog ears with tongue hanging out overlays and make more realistic avatars.

Re: Live streaming havng the right technology
mhhf1ve - I think that's always the hope with each new generation of technology, but the more capacity you make available, at least so far, the faster traffic grows to fill it. That being said, there are differences in the way 5G is being designed in order to try and rely not only on capacity and throughout.

Re: Live streaming havng the right technology
@mhhf1ve - I would have to agree, it's only a matter of time. Even if it is being done on small scale right now, it isn't really being tested to have a larger load. And I would imagine if 10 million people all jumped on at the same time, there would be issues to say the least. I definitely think it can be done, but it also needs more time for the technology to catch up.

Re: Live streaming havng the right technology
dcawrey - It's an awkward issue for operators. On one hand they want more video, more traffic on their network, because it makes their product more valuable. On the other hand, it can't grow too big too fast, because they can't keep investing in infinite capacity. So network traffic should grow just about in line with their business case, and no faster. That's an exquisite balance that is hard to organize.

Re: Live streaming havng the right technology
@Adi This is why it would seem the players who can best scale live video don't acutally own the content.

I would argue Facebook, Google and the like would know how to build this, and not the broadcast networks that have ownership over most live content.

It is a matter of time but the technology will have to be flawless. Can you imagine the Kingsman style mayhem that would happen if there was lag on a diehard fan's screen?
