Standards
"Of course, I would love to see one MANO open source organization and one standards organization. The industry is not growing enough, or has enough resources, to justify more than one."

I am glad that there was a discussion regarding standards and collaboration. I agree with Chiosi and think a MANO open source organization and a standards organization are both needed. I think that even though the industry is not growing enough, having standards may actually help the industry grow as well as forums and partnerships.

Re: Huawei's Chiosi Shares Views on ONAP, MANO & More
@Itsmeshawn22, I agree. Huawei will have to get up to speed quickly and effectively utilize their resources to remain competitive. It is great that ONAP and MANO will collaborate and work together to share ideas and resources.

Re: Huawei at the Open Networking Summit
@dcawrey, I agree, Huawei definitely needs standards. I am a huge proponent of standards and standization. A big company like Huawei should already have standards created. Instead of writing standards and buying technology according to the standards the standards will now be written based on the technology purchased.

Huawei's Chiosi Shares Views on ONAP, MANO & More
This is very interesting article becasue with the technology and they will be able to grow pretty quickly. They have to bring the resources up to date so they going to keep it moving witht he technology. I think the ONAP working together with MANO will be great source of group together.

Re: Huawei at the Open Networking Summit
A company as big as Huawei needs standard in order to operate on open platforms. It's familiar - similar to the standardization one sees in proprietary systems. Makes sense to me.

Huawei at the Open Networking Summit
They don't have enough resources and it not getting bigger or growing faster so maybe they should cut some or find a better way to manage all of these things.

Differentiated value: a bridge too soon
The problem with more-than-single standards and more-than-single organizations coming together (and I agree that inevitably they must) is exactly that the only thing that can drive that process is value. It's a reasonable speculation that eventually value will move into a more general and less differentiated structure; that's the natural pathway in technical evolution (every specialist hedgehog eventually evolves into a highly capable generalist fox).

The problem is that value is always relative to use, and we're only at the beginning of seeing what we are going to use the open source, dynamic, software driven networks to do -- let alone seeing all the uses or even necessarily the main ones.  It's a really good solution which is currently out there leaping onto all the problems it can find, and so the value is differentiating very rapidly -- differentiating rather than differentiated.  It will only be as we start to understand what the main, most important, and most vital uses are -- i.e. once value has actually become differentiated in the real world -- that we'll be able to do effective combining and merging.

Or in short, we know we will have to build a bridge ahead to cross into Universal MANO Land. We are pretty sure we will be going there. But right now we haven't yet found all the branches of the river and we're only beginning to cobble some partial bridges together and sort of hope they lead us in the right direction. A little patience with evolution is in order!
