AI at work
I thought AI was already at work and they say the have three portfolios that will make it work like Data Refinery,Monetizer and Fastermine. All three of them are very intersting and important and will bring value in their own unique way.

It's actually kind of scary to think about what all of this stuff could potentially do.

Will humans even be running the world at some point. I get we need technology as tools. But let's not let the machines take over, shall we?

Re: AI at work
@dcawrey - I personally limit my kids access to technology for this reason. There's almost a nostaligia to not using technology. But at the same time, realistically, if we have the means to create programs to make our lives easier, I think people will continue to create and buy those programs. It's just like "Alexa." I personally don't care for getting anything of the sort, because the idea creeps me out. But I know many people who have one. There's an appeal to it, whether we like it or not.

Re: AI at work
ElizabethV,

I'm very seriously wondering about how much resistance, ultimately, there will be to the personal assistant apps/algorithms. I'm wondering if there's a psychological equivalent of the Uncanny Valley, where people will be creeped out by having the machine "know" them but still feel like a machine, in the same way that the Uncanny Valley of animation is a big problem for movies at the moment (e.g. that it's easy to believe the toys are real in Toy Story but not that the people are -- the "human" characters like Andy and his mother are enough like people to prompt some human reaction but not enough like them for us to be comfortable).

Re: AI at work
@JohnBarnes I don't think there will be much resistance at all.

That is, of course, if the AI products are good. Right now we are indeed seeing friction because these things aren't saving time.

Someday they will.

Re: AI at work
DCawrey,

Well, we appear to be in the middle of the experiment at this point, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Many things have been very smoothly adopted because their advantages (acknowledged or not) were obvious; but also many things that would make total sense have been delayed, perhaps forever, because fundamentally people just don't like them (many forms of modular housing construction, videophones and 3D movies in their earlier construction, etc).

Re: AI at work
@dcawrey - I think you could be right. For some people maybe "Alexa" saves time. They like not having to pick up their phone and type in what they want to search for on Google, or they don't want to program their phone to just respond when you say "Okay, Google...." which my 2-year-old knows he can do...... At least for me, I like to actually look at the Google search myself, because I don't always just want the top response. But I happen to know for a fact, I'm a bit of an oddball..... So Alexa doesn't save me enough time to warrant the invasion of my limited online privacy. Now a robot that would make me dinner? Go shopping for me, literally, I want their robot body at the store, that could be a while different story.

@Elizabethtv I understand what you are saying. I personally use my Echo for all of the stuff that you mention, but I also use it to control smart devices in my house and you can do some shopping from Alexa, you can ask it to order stuff for you to be delivered to your door.

@afwriter I try to create smart home... but Echo not available in Canada... I could only set up Nest/Wink/GoControl Premium Home Security Suite but still have integration problems and have to reboot Wink hub often... I do hope one day I could controll everything creating smart home with Echo :) attached to it :)

Re: AI at work
@JohnBarnes - I think there will likely be an Uncanny Valley equivalent, but not enough to stop AI in its tracks. I think there are some people like me, who will always prefer a bit of their own autonomy (though I can be bought if given the right price.) Even my husband knows I will only accept so much help before I just want to do it myself. And if there are tasks I don't trust a human to do for me (including my husband,) there are certainly tasks I won't trust a robot to do for me.

I completely agree. It's important to plan ahead and make plans in case the first one fails. Most of the time you won't get it right the first time.

Brilliant.... and a little bit sneaky.
Mostly, I'm captivated by the idea of offering a discount that they have determined by analyzing the likely hood of a customer purchasing the product with that discount. Because as long as they offered more than a 10% discount - I know that will get me just about every time! (I personally hate 10% discounts, because they really aren't worth it. But then that information would have already been available through my past purchases.) Computers have really allowed retailers to up their selling game.

Re: Brilliant.... and a little bit sneaky.
ElizabethV,

Again, optimizing the discount offer mix is something that is now a routine problem in a mid-level (about 2nd year grad) data science class, something that might make a good midterm exam for a 2nd year grad student in machine learning or optimization theory. It's not just a possibility; it is shortly going to be routine.
