Re: Pretty much there
@freehe most likely. Money is the motivation for putting on a show for most people and businesses.

@Ariella, no, not yet. I would love to see that. But alas, I am sure there will be a fee for that.

@Joe Stanganelli, good point. I don't think they are there yet but are not on the path to implementing it.

Re: Pretty much there
Yes, I should imagine live sporting events might have a way of attracting more viewers than C-SPAN hearings. My own perception is a little off, I'm sure. I have only watched a handful of live streams...

Has a massive live streaming event with tens of millions of viewers tuning at the same time really been put to the bandwidth test?

Pretty much there
To my mind, it already does and has -- just not highly popular ones.  ;)

Here I am thinking of C-SPAN and other government hearings/events that are livestreamed on YouTube (the most popular one I've livestreamed probably being the Congressional hearings on Apple's tax-related practices a few years ago, when Tim Cook testified).

But what about major television shows?  Game of Thrones, which is one of the most popular TV shows in any given week when a new episode is featured, enjoys a substantial amount of its viewership from HBO Go and HBO Now.  It's not really livestreaming, but it's worth noting here that HBO has come a long way in addressing the technical considerations of trying to meet peak demand for a single piece of content broadcast using proprietary software.
