Re: Premium vs Skinny
elizabethtv - we are seeing some adoption in the US for skinny bundles - DISH has had a tough few quarters, and Sling has been the one positive. And a lot of Verizon's TV growth has come from its Custom package. Early days yet, but the expectation is that we'll see a chunk of full-fat subscribers switch to skinny bundles in the next couple of years.

Re: Premium vs Skinny
@clrmoney - The skinny bundles definitely seem like they would be promising, but supposedly the companies that are trying it now aren't having that much luck. I personally believe it's a fear from the consumers about making that kind of leap. But at this point it's still hard to say.

Re: Bundles Bundles Bundles
@Adi - I wish there were options like that in the US. I might have kept cable. DVR is honestly what I miss most about having cable. I could never even have it again, unless I had DVR. Which I guess is why cutting the cord actually worked the best for our family. My husband and I work opposite shifts so our kids don't have to go to daycare, which means at least 4 days a week we do well to see each other for about an hour. So we like to catch up on our shows together on our days off together. The biggest hurdle in remaining up-to-date with has been The Walking Dead, but Amazon let's you buy the episodes, which has worked out okay, so long as you're willing to pay for them individually, and we are.

Premium vs Skinny
The skinny TV should be better and be better than premim even though premium will probably cost more.

Re: Netflix Disrubts
afwriter - Definitely, I don't think I have seen anything in the past twenty years disrupt the TV value chain as violently as Netflix.

Re: Bundles Bundles Bundles
elizabethTV - in the UK, you get a basic package of broadcast channels plus a few others more or less for free. There is a widely used platform for free-to-air channels that has a zero monthly fee but requires an antenna, but it has forced pay-TV providers to offer broadcast packages for free when bundled with a broadband and telephony subscription. They then add additional features (such as a GBP 5/month DVR) or additional channels at different tiers. Sky is probably the most expensive as it has a number of high-demand cable channels and premium content, as well as sports, while TalkTalk is at the lower end of the spectrum, integrating the free-to-air service into its box.

Bundles Bundles Bundles
I'd pay $6 for a TV package! What does that entail? I like that in the UK at least they have providers talking about offering smaller TV packages with small increments between packages. I actually think the idea of "add-ons" is great because it allows for more customization without tacking on a massive cost. I also think it's interesting that most providers seem to agree that Netflix needs to be included in packages. It's almost like giving people a little of what they would have if they did choose to cut the cord, without having them actually cut the cord. Keeping people tied to their cable packages, while giving them more options. I suppose it makes sense for most people, even if it doesn't for me.

Netflix Disrubts
<He also felt that it was important to integrate Netflix into the operator's line-up, saying "it took us a while to get our thinking this way but now we are partners. Basically, customers want this content. So if interests align, then it is sensible to add them.">

I don' think that we would be as far down this road as we are if Netflix and Amazon hadn't disrupted the industry by cutting out the middle man and releasing their own original content.

Re: Picky millenials
There's certainly a generation today that only wants to pay for the content they consume. With the 1,000 channel packages, no one is going to watch all that. Being able to pay for what you want is just something that is going to become standard in this industry.

Picky millenials
Great summary by Medea Nocentini on the challenges pay-tv providers are facing. It's certainly a challenge to meet the desires of millenials that want to cherry-pick content at low rates.
