Re: Vendors
Another [area of differentiation] is business continuity and disaster recovery scenarios...

Also would like to add these two as well - business continuity and DR becomes extremely important services when you think of cloud. It is obvious that a vendor with these capabilities will certainly hold value in Clud world.

Vendors
How do we optimize the configuration and architecture of the cloud? How do I optimize the spend and the cost? That's where we really start to differentiate.

Very critical factors - No wonder if these turn out to be decision making factors when it comes to vendor selection. Vendors really have to be creative with their models.

At the same time, there's not this massive rush to 100% cloud. There is, "Hey, how do I use what I have today, the investments of what I have in my own data center? Can I use a modular approach to delivering services within my own data center, because I spent those dollars already, and then consume some cloud?" So there's more of a hybrid approach that we see in those environments..

This is very true. THough companies are enthusiastic about Cloud, the general approach is more like why can't we levrage what we have today, what we have invested already etc. But certainly there is more interest everywhere.

I agree with you. Dropbox is really trying to hold in this area.

Re: Polls: Where is the Enterprise Cloud?
I just hope we're going to see more options in enterprise cloud. Yeah, there's a bunch of calendar solutions. But that doesn't make up for the fact there aren't enough cloud email options. Or document collaboration options. We need more of that kind of stuff.

Re: Polls: Where is the Enterprise Cloud?
Mike,

But the case is so simple that it writes itself: find any function the company does via software, and it's always safer to have the "server" dispersed and offsite than to have it located at a single point onsite. The scenarios where that might not be true are pretty scarce:

•if you need really fast response and can't afford radio lag (like, say, you're doing algorithmic trading on the moon, I suppose).

•If the data must be positively secure, like nuclear-war-codes level secure, and you can afford to put that one server inside a fortress, because hacking is admittedly easier and cheaper than physical assault.

•If the only person who understands your existing process and software will only work on Archaic 2.2 and the cloud doesn't even offer file translation from the early versions of Archaic into Obsolete/Obscure.  (In which case you better wrap that person up safely until you get the knowledge recorded and transferred).

Otherwise, the case for the cloud is easy to write and always getting stronger.

Re: Polls: Where is the Enterprise Cloud?
Virtually equal, I think. And given the inherent advantages of the cloud, in any contest between cloud and legacy, cloud will win all the ties from here on out.  Which, I believe, was Mr. Matherson's point about our having crossed over the tipping point, so that "move to cloud" is now the default over "keep legacy going."

Amazon, Google, Microsoft. These are the big players. There are others trying to get in, too.

Dropbox is making efforts. There's now a Facebook enterprise. And despite what some might say is limited functionality, a number of teams are using Slack. It's exciting times, I just hope to see more options from the upstarts.

Re: Polls: Where is the Enterprise Cloud?
I'll go with "virtually equal" but with that said I think businesses need to have a clear understanding of what they want to do in the cloud, and make sure they have employees that understand why it's important. What is the business case other than storage, and how does cloud improve the bottom line?
