Who knew AT&T was just a gigantic spam filter?

All kidding aside, carriers have had to take the burden of protecting customers. If the gates were wide open, there would be a ton of problems for individuals and businesses alike.

@srufolo1 - Take comfort in knowing that I just found out yesterday I'm paying Verizon more for just myself and my husbands phones than my brother pays for 4 lines with AT&T. So if you're  paying AT&T to be a gigantic spam filter, what am I paying Verizon for? Do they have similar stats??

@elizabethv AT&T offers a family plan, which saves money. Maybe Verizon does not have a similar deal. Possibly Verizon has better service? I can't make the comparison because I've never used Verizon. If other people are like me, I don't like to switch service providers. It seems like too much trouble. Also, you get used to a certain loyal customer status, where you feel like the provider may be giving you breaks on things, like waiving certain fees, etc ...

@Michelle  Well, there are three people on my plan, and I use a personal hotspot to access the Internet because AT&T, my provider, unfortunately does not provide Wi-Fi (yet), at least not in my neck of the woods. A hotspot uses up a lot of data. I guess I am really not doing myself any favors by not having the cable company provide the Internet for me along with a TV subscription. I find everything costs a lot these days.

It is quiet interstig to know that there are places where AT&T doesn't offer wifi service. This makes me think that - no wonder there is lot to be caught up with. Just having a feature alone is not going to help but make that accessibe is what the real key is. Till that point consumer is not experiencing any value out of it. I certainly agree that there could be many valid barriers why we still aren't there.

Cybersecurity Attacks
I am not surprised by the statistics. Companies do not enforce their policies, don't have any policies, do not properly train employees on security measures or are lacking effective and current security software and tools.

I worked in IT security for 6 years and you would not believe how many companies have not updated their security patches and opearting systems. Some were behind 5 to 6 versions and were in shock when a cyber attack occurred. LOL!

AT&T: IoT Cyberattacks Increase 400%
"Cybercrime damages are projected to rise to $6 trillion annually by 2021, according to the report."

Wow, that figure is phenomenal, surpassing U.S. government spending of $4.073 trillion.

Half of businesses haven't even updated their cybersecurity protection in over 3 years. What are they waiting for?

@afwriter - I thought it was crazy that they said they haven't really done anything to advance their security in 3 years. I just feel like they need to be more on top of this as an issue. But then we've repeatedly said we think the need for more security/ and/or for security to be a top priority is a must. It seems not all businesses believe, or at least act as if this is so.

Costs
Every six months I call my cell phone carrier and cable provider to ask about discounts and specials. Most companies don't advertise the good deals and customers have to call to ask for them. If they tell me no, I remind them that I am a loyal customer, quote competitor prices. If they still tell me no I ask for the cancellation department and ask them what are you going to do to keep me as a satisfied customer.

I say no at least 3 times until I get a deal that is acceptable.

This is the key -- and loyalty means more than just having done business with them for a while.  They keep track of how timely you are with paying your bills, what your service call history is like, and just generally how much of a pain in the butt you are.  Some customers they will bend for to make happy.  Others, they prefer to just tell them to not let the door hit them on the way out.

Re: Costs
@freehe  I just ordered Optimum's Triple Play and I tried to get the guy to offer me a one-year premium channel. His reply was that I get Showtime for only three months. The Triple Play is advertised as $89.99 for two years, but they hide certain fees, like the $10 apiece for each box and various taxes. Right after I ordered it, I saw a commercial about Spectrum (previously Time Warner Cable). Their lowest price tier was for $29.99 for Triple Play, also for two years. Optimum sweetened its deal with a $200 American Express card (that you have to wait 90 days for). I should have asked how much the service will increase after two years.

@srufolo1, they are waiting for a cyber attack. Security is not a high priority for most companies and most are reactive instead of proactive which costs ten times more to fix than being proactive and implementing effective security measures.

If AT&T is blocking 75% of spam daily, are they able to move that percentage up any? How effective would that be? How effective is what they are currently blocking? Is there anyway to really know? Mostly I just have all these questions. It seems to make sense that spam is what most people are using to hack into other systems (though in thinking about it, it's just about always been that way.) I just wonder why people don't already know that. I don't ever open an email without knowledge of who sent it. Though I guess hackers are getting better and making emails that look like you recognize the source when you really don't. I'm sure every security measure taken and learned the hackers will just move one step ahead and continue to play their game.

In some instances spam phishing emails result in a cyber attack due to users not reading the entire email to identify red flags that indicate it is a phishing email, lack of common sense, not verifying the sender of the email or verifying URLs that appear in the email or assuming that all emails received are valid.

I honestly can't see it ever really decreasing too much.  While technology and security is always getting better and looking to strive forward, So are the same hackers that are seeking to break it.  While something might take a long time to crack, eventually it will always break as nothing is perfect.  I think cyber attacks will either continue to increase or only slightly decrease.

I wouldn't deny your thoughts about potential increase of cyber attacks. But having that hope for atleast sight decrease wouldn't hurt and that is very necessary to keep the cyber fight moving further to address the attacks. we must keep that positive hope alive and moving.
