Re: FCC Moves Forward With New Broadcast Standard
The thing is, nearly every radio station has streaming audio on its website, so any phone or pad already functionally gets local radio, if the user wants it. And if you are in a new to you area, just google "radio stations near here" and you'll get a list of radio station websites -- most of which will offer streaming audio of the live broadcast.

Re: FCC Moves Forward With New Broadcast Standard
Remembering the FM radio feature in old MP3 players is probably evidence over the air isn't going to work for devices these days. In addition, why would carriers even support such a thing in devices? They make money from data, not free content.

Re: FCC Moves Forward With New Broadcast Standard
The live broadcast option failed once very strongly in  a related area -- at the same time that the iPod came out, several other mp3 players tried to beat it by offering to include an FM radio. (This had been a popular option on the competitors of the old Walkman cassette players and on some of the portable disc players) Turned out nobody wanted it; they wanted to play mp3s on their player, period.

OTOH I really wouldn't mind having a radio option on my smartphone; sometimes when I'm doing housework I put on headphones, go to the mobile app for the radio station that carries basketball and baseball, and catch a game. It just feels a bit weird to be using a smartphone like an old-fashioned transistor radio.

Re: FCC Moves Forward With New Broadcast Standard
It would definitely change the game. I wonder how difficult/expensive it would be to add components to a smartphone to recieve OTA channels.

Re: FCC Moves Forward With New Broadcast Standard
@afwriter OTA channels on devices would be really cool. I think one of the things digital transformation has left out is live broadcast. This includes news and sports. Could this be a reality? I would hope so, it's certainly something I would use if it comes to fruition. That's a big "if" at this point, however.

With the changes at the FCC, one really cannot know--there are too many unknowns.  However, we may be surprised.

Of course, nothing is ever easy when the government is involved but I think something like this is likely to be approved quickly. I also like the idea of mobile devices getting OTA channels, but it again points to the decline of the big screen.

FCC Moves Forward With New Broadcast Standard
The concept of a consumer smartphone serving as an over-the-air programming device is particularly attractive. Also, it addresses people with disabilities, which is a good thing. Hopefully, there are not too many obstacles in getting this approved.
