Linux Foundation Welds OPEN-O, ECOMP Into ONAP
This article is important and knowledgeable because it explains the linux. It also explains the resouses of ECOMP and OPEN--O and how they connect. the technology helps them out  alot these days. I totally agree with the plan of Linux and OPEN-O.

Re: Linux ONAP
freehe,

The box is what semioticians call "privileging" -- a sign that shows that other signs are to be taken seriously or ranked higher. The box signifies to older managers that there's a "real" company out there somewhere and your operating software is not some middleschooler in the basement! (And the actual effective privileging is unfamiliar to an older generation of manaagement outside the computer fields).

Oddly enough the box may also signify someone was slick enough to get some startup money from a VC, and that the box is effectively empty, and you've been conned -- but at least that risk is familiar.

@dcawrey, I agree, many employees and company executives are afraid of change and especially of a technology that is not in a box.

OPEN-O, ECOMP
This happens all the time in the industry, technology that is similar or companies that provide overlapping technology or solutions, they after some years they merge.

"Specifically, OPEN-O, ECOMP and ETSI's OSM were seen as competitive or overlapping solutions in the NFV Management and Orchestration (MANO) sector, but combining OPEN-O and ECOMP could lead to more service provider adoption for both as well as a clearer path for vendors."

Connecting users
They are pretty hopeful and may be over estimating the success. Only time will time what really happens

""It is an enabler of the IoT and 5G," Joshipura said. "When 5G comes along there are going to be billions of connected devices, which inherently requires network automation. This is the framework that will allow carriers to do this globally."

Re: Separating dancers from the dance?
DCawrey,

And sometimes it takes a while to realize that two technologies really only work well when  they are merged; one way mergers like aviation and radio, two way mergers like skyscrapers and elevators, and natural obvious mergers like hot dogs and sauerkraut.

Re: Separating dancers from the dance?
I think we've seens a number of technologies start as separated, then merge.

One that comes to mind immediately is Android and Chrome OS. When the two first came out, they were separate. Over time it became logical for them to become one. Sometimes in order to come together two technologies need to first be apart.

Separating dancers from the dance?
This sentence,

OPEN-O covers orchestration but ECOMP covers control, management, policies, analytics, design and other topics

made me ask why they were ever even thought of as  separate in the first place. The first ten or so definitions of network orchestration that show up in Google literally mention all the things ECOMP is said to cover. So it looks to me like this was, if anything, long overdue.

Re: Linux ONAP
While many service providers are still apprehensive about open source, I see no reason for that stance. Some of this I think has more to do with cultural shifts inside of organizations over anything else. We're going to continue to see more Linux Foundation projects come together, especially in networking as paradigms change.

Linux ONAP
I like how ONAP offers something different virtually to be apart of the others and being valuable.
