The cycles of centralization and decentralization do seem to happen over and over, but I wonder if they'll eventually stop somehow. With some kind of federalized systems of pseudo-centralized systems that can be managed centrally, but have decentralized underlying operations....

@mhh: As with business processes, I suspect that this sort of thing is cyclical -- we went through an age of centralization, then decentralization, and now centralization again.  Content decentralization will happen again.  And, so too, re-centralization.

@Joe we shall see. Skinny bundles plus other platforms don't seem to be an answer, however.

That's exactly what I expect to see. I expect content distritribution prices to stay in the higher range (typical cable rates) for streaming. The result will be high-priced a la carte and skinny bundles. Not great. Probably no better deal than traditional cable...

The larger play is content ownership. Every bit of content will soon be siloed into skinny bundles and very expensive all-you-can-eat plans....

Skinny bundles are just a take-off of the older monetization scheme of "skinny" add-on packages.  The only difference is you're just getting the add-on instead of the rest of it.

For skinny bundles to be viable while protecting cable operators' core businesses, they'll have to be very targeted and limited, but they can indeed work.
